On the third day after Prince Adam left the capital for Northmere Academy, a summons arrived from the palace.

I looked at the royal carriage parked outside the ducal estate and let out a cold smile.

Adam had barely left when the queen couldn’t wait to summon me. She clearly thought his absence made me easy to push around.

Too bad she was wrong. I wasn’t a lamb. I was a wolf.

Queen Isabella’s private chambers were warmer than I had expected, or rather, stiflingly hot.

Gold decorations were everywhere, and the heavy incense in the air was almost choking.

Queen Isabella sat on a gem-studded lounge, casually fanning herself with a folding fan.

O

“Your Majesty,” I said, giving a standard military salute instead of the curtsy expected of noblewomen.

Queen Isabella’s eyelid twitched slightly. She clearly disliked my appearance. I was dressed in simple riding clothes, with a short blade still hanging at my waist.

“The Duchess of Silverpeak has arrived,” Queen Isabella said after dismissing the attendants. Her tone tried to sound gentle, but the air of superiority was impossible to hide. “Have a seat.”

I didn’t bother with politeness and sat down heavily in a nearby chair, my back straight and steady,

“Cindy,” Queen Isabella said, switching to my name as if trying to sound closer. “Adam has gone to the academy. With him away, there are some things I need to say to you on his behalf.”

“Please go ahead, Your Majesty.”

“You’re a clever girl, and a capable one,” Queen Isabella said with a sigh, putting on a look of heartfelt concern. “At the banquet that day, you certainly stole the spotlight. But you also offended Princess Margaret beyond repair.”

She paused and watched my expression. “That woman has a heart smaller than the eye of a needle, and her methods are vicious. You may have Adam protecting you now, but he can’t be by your side at all times. With your temperament, you’ll suffer for it eventually,”

“So?” I lifted my cup and took a light sip. “Is Your Majesty advising me to call off the engagement, or are you suggesting I apologize to Princess Margaret?”

Queen Isabella choked on her words and looked awkward. “That is not exactly what I meant, I just think that women sometimes need to know when to soften. If it is for Adam’s sake, and for your own good, perhaps you could keep a lower profile. For example, delay the wedding. Or go make peace with Princess

Margaret. Offer a gift, smooth things over, and put this behind you,” she said.

I could not help laughing.

“Your Majesty,” I said as I set the cup down. The porcelain base tapped the table with a sharp sound. “Do you think Princess Margaret is a lion?”

Queen Isabella froze. “What?”

“In my eyes, she is nothing more than a toothless hyena that only knows how to bluff,” I said as I stood and slowly walked toward her. My shadow fell over her, and she instinctively leaned back.

“You fear her because you have always placed yourself in the position of prey,” I said quietly, my voice calm but unyielding. “But in my world, the word fear does not exist. If she dares to scheme behind my back, I will strike her head-on. If she dares to bare her claws, I will cut them off.”

“You … you child, how can you be so full of killing intent?” Queen Isabella panicked. “This is the royal family. There are rules.”

“Rules?” I let out a cold laugh. “When Princess Margaret desecrated my father’s and brother’s graves, did she follow the rules? When she humiliated you at the banquet, did she follow the rules? Your Majesty. reason is useless against people like her. Only someone fiercer and harder than she is will make her afraid.”

I picked up a delicate crystal cup from the table and held it in my palm.

“And do you really think Princess Margaret has no weaknesses?” I looked straight into Queen Isabella’s eyes. “Her dead husbands. Her illegitimate children who disappeared. Her daughter who knows nothing but wasting money. She is buried in filth. If I choose to investigate, I can ruin her completely.”

Crack.

With a sharp sound, the hard crystal cup shattered instantly in my hand, turning into glittering powder that slipped through my fingers.

Queen Isabella trembled violently, her face drained of color.

I brushed the powder from my hands. My eyes were sharp like a wolf’s, my voice low and clear.

“There is an unwritten rule at the academy that I would like to share with you. If no one provokes me, I leave them alone. If someone does, I eliminate the problem at the root. The last time you summoned me and made me kneel for half an hour, I endured it for Prince Adam’s sake, and out of respect for you as an elder. I can tolerate it once.”

I leaned forward slightly and met Queen Isabella’s terrified gaze, “But there will never be a second time. Your Majesty, you are a smart woman. You should understand that a daughter-in-law who can fight, kill. and protect your son is far better than one who only cries and lets herself be bullied. Isn’t that right?”

Queen Isabella stared at me, her throat bobbing several times. In the end, she could not say a single word.
