Princess Margaret’s POV:

The wheels of the carriage rolled over the smooth stone roads of the palace grounds, producing a dull, repetitive rumble.

I sat on the velvet cushions inside, my lace handkerchief already torn to shreds in my hands.

In the mirror, my makeup was flawless, but the rage burning in my eyes was something no amount of expensive powder could hide.

“Cindy…”

I forced the name out through clenched teeth. Every syllable felt like chewing on a chunk of bloody raw

meat.

That bitch. That bastard who came out of nowhere.

She actually dared to expose my past in public.

She dared to drag up an old, buried scandal at my birthday banquet and lay it out in front of everyone something rotten left out for everyone to see.

I remembered the looks the nobles had given me at the banquet. Shock. Disdain. Mockery. Even open schadenfreude.

And Reynold. That ungrateful old fool actually dared to turn his face away from me.

“Your Highness, we’ve arrived,” the maid said timidly.

I took a deep breath and adjusted my expression.

I was Margaret. I was the most exalted princess in this kingdom.

I couldn’t lose.

As long as I got to Mother, as long as I cried about how Cindy had shown no respect for her elders and had slandered the royal family, Mother would stand on my side.

She always had. Ever since I was young, no matter what I did, as long as I cried, Mother protected me without question.

As for Benjamin…

Hah. That dead man.

Even after being dead for so many years, he still caused me trouble.

If he had not rejected me back then, if he had obediently signed a contract with me, I would never have humiliated him.

This was all his fault for not knowing his place.

It was just a grave. What was wrong with urinating on it?

That was my way of honoring him.

I stepped down from the carriage and looked up at the quiet palace before me.

“Stillwater Palace.”

This was where the woman with the highest status in the kingdom lived. My mother, the Queen Mother.

This time, I would make Cindy pay a terrible price.

I would make Adam reject her. I would drive her out of the capital and make her die like a stray

Queen Elizabeth’s POV:

The moon orchids in Stillwater Palace were in full bloom.

I held a small silver pair of pruning shears and trimmed a branch that had grown crooked.

At my age, I had little interest left in power or conflict.

I preferred tending flowers and plants. They were far more honest than people.

dog.

“Your Majesty, Princess Margaret has arrived,” the elderly lady-in-waiting whispered beside me. “She doesn’t look very well.”

I sighed and set the shears down.

“My daughter is like this rose,” I said, gesturing at the pruned branch. “All thorns, no bloom. Nearly 200 years old, and still as childish as ever.”

Before I finished speaking, hurried footsteps sounded outside.

“Mother! You have to stand up for me!”

Margaret’s crying reached the room before she did. She rushed into the conservatory, completely ignoring decorum, and dropped to her knees in front of me, Tears streamed down her face like beads spilling from a broken necklace,

“What happened?” I asked. I knew perfectly well what was going on, but I still put on a look of surprise. “Today was your celebration. Why are you crying like this? Who upset you?”

“It was Cindy!” Margaret looked up, her usually well-maintained face twisted with rage. “That uncivilized little savage. She caused a scene at my birthday banquet, tore up my gift, and made up lies to humiliate me in front of everyone. Mother, if you don’t punish her, where is the dignity of the royal family? Where does that leave my honor?”

I looked at her, mildly amused.

I had met that girl Cindy before.

Clear eyes. Straight spine. Good material.

Unless she had been pushed to the edge, she would never bite first.

“Made up lies?” I asked calmly as I sat back down in my wicker chair and lifted my cup. “What exactly did she say?”

Margaret visibly stiffened.

Her eyes flickered, avoiding my gaze.

“She… she said I was disrespectful to Benjamin,” she stammered.

“In what way?” I pressed.

Just then, a servant’s voice rang out from the doorway. “His Majesty King Ryken has arrived. Her Majesty Queen Isabella has arrived.”

My son, King Ryken, walked in with his wife.

Ryken’s expression was dark, hard as iron.

And the queen, who was usually meek and subdued, kept her head lowered. Still, I could sense the faint smile she was struggling to suppress.

“Margaret, you’re here too,” Ryken said coldly. He did not bother with formalities and sat down in a chair opposite me. “Good timing. I also want to know exactly what Cindy said that made you so furious you had to come running to Mother about it.”
