Princess Margaret was like a madwoman-and one with status. With someone like her, I had to keep everything under control. If she decided to go down, she’d drag us all with her.
That wouldn’t help us at all.
Jewel still looked lost. “So… we just sit here and watch?”
“Not just watch. We have to make her think she’s about to win.” I gave my orders. “Tell everyone in the pack -no one’s allowed to go out looking for trouble, no arguments, nothing. Lock the doors. Act like we’re scared and backing down.”
“But Jasmine’s been wronged…”
“Send Jasmine ten gold coins to make up for it.” I narrowed my eyes, letting a cold edge creep into my voice. “I’ll remember this. When Princess Margaret finally runs out of money-when she gets sloppy and desperate—I’ll take everything back, with interest.”
Looking at how certain I was, the panic on Jewel’s face faded.
“Yes, Ms. Cindy!”
Once Jewel left, Diana stretched with a yawn, clearly bored.
“Sometimes I just don’t get it. We could storm the old witch’s house and tear her throat out, but here we are, tiptoeing around. It’s just not satisfying.”
“That’s politics, Diana.” I leaned back in my chair and opened up my father’s old book on military strategy. “Violence can’t fix everything. There’s no way the two of us can take on the whole werewolf kingdom.”
I was about to talk more with Diana about how to deal with people like Princess Margaret when Jewel came rushing back.
“Ms. Cindy, Prince Adam sent a letter. The messenger’s outside, It looks urgent…”
The messenger was Prince Adam’s personal guard, Chase.
He’d once fought with me in Southreach, but now he looked like he’d been dragged through hell.
He was drenched, his clothes ripped by thorns, grass clinging to him everywhere. But what really shocked me was his condition-he’d run himself nearly to death, his chest heaving, even foam on his lips.
“Your… Your Grace…”
Chase dropped to his knees, hands trembling as he pulled out a letter wrapped in oiled paper.
“His Highness… urgent message… for you… three days… I ran for three days and nights…”

He barely finished before collapsing, out cold on the floor.
“Someone, get a doctor here now!”I shouted, snatching the letter from his hand.

The envelope bore a familiar wax seal-Prince Adam’s personal seal-and was perfectly dry, proof that Chase had risked his life to keep it safe from the rain.
I tore it open. Inside was just a single thin sheet, with hurried and messy writing.
“Cindy, come to Liberty City immediately. It’s urgent. Adam.”
No greeting, no explanation, just a blunt, urgent order.
