Half an hour later, Chase sat across from me, gulping down a bowl of broth. The color was finally returning to his face.
I sat opposite him, fully geared up. The flexible material of my clothes meant I could shift into a giant wolf without the hassle of changing. A short knife was strapped to my thigh, and a packed bag was slung over my shoulder.
“Go on.” I looked at him. “What happened? Wasn’t Adam supposed to be at the academy? How did he end up in Liberty City?”
Chase wiped his mouth, fear and anger flickering in his eyes.
“Your Grace, this is a long story, and honestly, it’s hard to believe.”
He swallowed his food and began to explain what happened in the past few days.
It turned out Prince Adam had finished his business at the academy and was planning to head straight back to the capital.
But as they passed through Highwind Territory, Chase caught a thief by chance and stumbled onto something unexpected.
“That day, His Highness and I were walking down the street when a little beggar bumped into him. I thought the kid was trying to steal his coin pouch, so I grabbed him right away.” Chase gestured as he spoke. “The kid was filthy, all muddy and scrawny, but…”
He paused and looked up at me, his eyes troubled. “When His Highness saw the kid’s face, he just froze. The kid had a pair of… silver-gray eyes.”
“Silver-gray?” My hand jerked, and hot tea splashed across the back of my hand, but I didn’t even feel it.
On this continent, silver-gray eyes were incredibly rare.
They were the mark of the direct Silverpeak bloodline-a gift from the Moon Goddess to our family.
“You must have seen wrong.” My voice came out dry. “Maybe they were just gray, or it was the lighting.”
“His Highness thought that too,” Chase said quickly, “but just as he tried to get a better look, a huge black wolf shot out of nowhere. It grabbed the kid and ran off His Highness panicked, shifted, and took off after them. I followed too, but that damn place is nothing but alleys, and it stinks of sewage. There were too many mixed scents. In the end… we lost them.”
“Silver-gray eyes… carried off by a black wolf…” Diana’s voice murmured in my mind, “Cindy, my blood is boiling. This isn’t just a coincidence.”
“Shut up.” I snapped back at her, but my heartbeat was already racing out of control.

Even after the child was taken away, Prince Adam refused to give up. He went back and grabbed another beggar.
After a brutal interrogation, the beggar finally confessed, revealing a vast, horrifying underground network.
It was a local beggar gang.
But these weren’t just beggars-they were monsters in human skin.
They kidnapped children and poisoned them until they couldn’t speak. They even broke their hands and feet, turning them into twisted little monsters to beg for sympathy on the streets.
“That city lord is a complete bastard!” Chase’s jaw clenched. “His Highness went to confront him, and the guy tried to blame the leader of the beggar gang, saying that he had no control over them. In reality, he’d already been bought off. The whole thing was a criminal operation from top to bottom!”
Prince Adam was furious.
He executed several nobles involved right there, then used the intelligence network Fern left him. Following the trail, they found that the group was just using the beggar gang as a cover. The real base-and that child with silver-gray eyes-had already been moved even farther away-to Liberty City.
“His Highness kept tracking them, never stopping for sleep, and finally found the child’s trail in Liberty City.” Chase’s voice dropped, his eyes fixed on me. “That child… was found.” City”
“Found?” My throat felt stuffed with cotton. “How … is he?”
