“It’s bad.” Chase turned his head, unable to look into my eyes. “He was poisoned mute. His left lower leg is deformed, probably broken on purpose and never set right. And … the kid’s mind seems off. He’s extremely wary, bites anyone who comes near.”

As I listened, I felt cold all over. My heart ached, like snakes were gnawing at it.

“His Highness couldn’t confirm his identity,” Chase said at last. “The boy won’t cooperate, and his face is badly damaged. His Highness was afraid something might happen on the way back to the Royal Court. He’s also scared it’s a mistake and we all get our hopes up for nothing. That’s why he’s urgently summoning you to identify him.”

“Identify what?” I shot to my feet, my chair scraping harshly across the floor.

“Identify… if he’s…” Chase didn’t dare say the name.

“Impossible.” I cut him off, my tone hard. “Absolutely impossible.”

Just then, a young, smiling face flashed in

my

mind.

That was my nephew, the only son of my brother Steven Spencer.

His name was Astra Spencer, the only boy born to the Silverpeak Pack in three generations. He had clear silver-gray eyes and two cute dimples on his cheeks.

But he was dead.

Thirteen years ago, the vampires attacked Silverpeak Pack.

When I rushed home from the academy, all I saw was ruins,

I remembered it all clearly.

Astra’s uncle, Baron Kazek Marrowell, knelt in the rubble, crying his heart out.

He was holding a tiny body, burned to a crisp.

That body was unrecognizable, but the platinum necklace around his neck, and the dagger with his name clutched tight in his hand-those were both gifts from me.

“Astra is dead.” I shouted at Chase. “I saw his body buried with my own eyes! I covered him with dirt myself! Has Prince Adam lost his mind? Just because some street kid looks like him, I’m supposed to travel 1200 miles ?”

“But, Cindy, did you really ‘see’ him killed?” Diana’s voice suddenly turned sharp, piercing right through my defenses. “What you saw was a charred corpse. You never smelled his scent. Everything stank of smoke that night. It covered up every other scent.”

Chapter 176 My Nephew

“Baron Kazek confirmed it!” I argued in my mind. “He’s Astra’s uncle!”

“Baron Kazek had lost his mind by then. Grief can blind anyone.” Diana pressed on, “And don’t you think it’s strange? Why would Prince Adam be so desperate? If it was just resemblance, he wouldn’t have called you. He must have found something, something only you can confirm.”

“I’m not going.” I clenched my teeth, sat back down, but my hands were shaking badly. “I can’t go. I can’t take that kind of disappointment. That’s Astra… If I go and it isn’t him, it’ll kill me all over again.”

“What if it’s him?”

Diana’s voice grew gentle, but also unbearably cruel.

“What if it’s really Astra? What if he’s crawled through hell for years, with a shattered leg and a ruined voice, waiting for his aunt to come save him. And you don’t go because you’re scared of disappointment… Cindy, could you live with yourself?”

That sentence hit me like a sledgehammer, smashing all my defenses to pieces.

I froze, and tears started falling before I realized it.

What if it’s him?

What if … what if it really is him?
