Cindy’s POV:
I must have looked like a wreck.

My hair was a mess. My skin was deathly pale, my eyes were sunken, and my lips were cracked and peeling. My clothes were stained all over.
I’d lost so much weight that I felt like I could be blown over by the wind.
“Prince Adam… Where is he?” My voice was hoarse, rough as sandpaper.
“In here! His Highness has been waiting for you!”
The doors swung open.
I staggered inside.
The room was dimly lit.
Prince Adam was sitting in the hall, holding a cup of coffee that had gone cold.
He jerked his head up at the sound.
In that moment, I saw the heavy dark circles under his eyes, the same exhaustion I felt.
He’d lost weight. Stubble shadowed his jaw, and the eyes that once sparkled were now bloodshot and
anxious.
“Cindy!”
The moment Adam saw me, the cup slipped from his hand and shattered on the floor.
He rushed over and caught me as I nearly collapsed.
“Oh God, look at you…” His voice was shaking, all worry and guilt.
He wanted to hug me but seemed afraid he’d hurt me, so he just gripped my cold hands tight. “It’s only been three days… did you run here the whole way?”
“The child?” I ignored his concern, staring into his eyes and squeezing his hands so hard I nearly crushed his bones. “Where’s the child?”
Adam froze for a second. He looked at me, and his expression grew complicated. There was pity in his eyes, and hesitation.
“In the guest room,” Adam said softly. “Cindy, you have to brace yourself for what you’ll see.”
He helped me down the hall, explaining as we walked.

“His condition is bad. When the withdrawal hits, he hurts himself. The rest of the time, he’s aggressive. For his own safety, I had to… lock him up.”
“His face… is it ruined?” I asked, every word like a knife.
“Not entirely.” Adam sighed. “He’s got a lot of scars, some fresh, some old. He’s so thin that his features are distorted. Most of all … his mind isn’t right. I tried to talk to him, but he doesn’t respond, or maybe he just refuses to. He only curls up in a corner or lunges to bite anyone who comes close.”
“Then why… do you think it’s him?” I stopped, standing before the closed door.
Adam was silent for a while.
“Call it a hunch.” He looked at the door. “And his eyes. Cindy, I don’t want to give you false hope, but when I saw those eyes, I remembered yours, and his. That’s when I thought, maybe there’s Silverpeak blood in him…”
Standing at that door, I took a deep breath.
“Open it,” I said.
“Cindy…”
“Open it!”
Adam drew a long breath and pulled out the key.
As the chains rattled, the heavy wooden door slowly swung open.
A wave of smells-mold, medicine, filth-hit me all at once.
The room was a mess, with tables and chairs overturned and scratch marks all over the walls.
In the darkest corner, a small, blackened shape was curled up,
At the sound of the door, that shape moved.
“Rrraugh!”
A sound like a wounded beast, not a child, growled out of the shadows.
The next second, the shape shot at us like a cannonball!
Adam reacted instantly, stepping in front of me and grabbing the attacking figure,
“Don’t move! Settle down!” Adam barked, clearly used to dealing with this by now.
The child fought wildly under Adam’s grip, jaws.snapping for Adam’s arm.
All that came out of his throat were harsh, broken noises-no real words.

I stood behind Adam, frozen, watching like an outsider.
That child… he was just skin and bones.
His limbs were as thin as sticks.
