I rushed back to Serene Residence with werewolf doctors I’d hired at great cost from the capital, only to find Grandma already fading fast, slipping into unconsciousness. Her wolf spirit flickered faintly, like a fragile candle battling a fierce wind, ready to be snuffed out any second.

Save her now!I shouted at the socalled expert werewolf healers, my voice raw with panic.

But one after another, they examined her and shook their heads, heavy with sorrow.

Alpha, I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do,an elder werewolf doctor said quietly. Mrs. Priscilla’s body has long been worn out beyond repair. Years ago, she should have returned to the Moon Goddess. It was only a master healer’s secret skills and rare medicines that kept her alive this long.

Another doctor nodded in agreement. Once that magic sustaining her life is broken, there’s no turning back. Mrs. Priscilla’s wolf spirit has almost completely faded. No medicine can save her now. She’s running on empty.”

Running on empty, the magic broken

Those words stabbed my heart like a searing blade. Rupert! He must have stopped her treatment!

And the one behind all this must be Cindy!

If she hadn’t pushed Rupert away, Grandma wouldn’t be like this!

A storm of rage and despair exploded inside me My wolf spirit howled in agony, desperate to tear everything apart!

Cindy!

I clenched my teeth and spat her name out, every syllable heavy with deadly anger. Ignoring everything else, I charged toward Moonwhisper Residence like a beast gone wild.

Bang!

I kicked open the door. She was sitting there by the window, calm and collected, casually flipping through a scroll made of beastskin pages.

Her indifferent attitude was like throwing gasoline on my burning fury, setting my insides ablaze.

Cindy!I stormed up to her, my eyes bloodshot my wolf spirit’s fierce aura pressing down on her. You poisoner! You actually have the nerve to read while Grandma’s dying? Do you even realize this is all your fault? If you hadn’t forced Rupert away, she’d still be alive!

I expected her to panic, to show some fear or guilt.

But she showed nothing.

Slowly, she lifted her eyes, cold and clear like ice staring at me like I was a strangeralmost pitying.

James, she said, her voice as sharp and cold as a frozen blade cutting through my anger, I already told you, I didn’t drive anyone away. Rupert made that choice himself. And second, you know Priscilla’s condition better than I do. If I hadn’t brought Rupert in to treat her, she would’ve died years ago. I did everything I could to keep her alive.”

She paused, her tone dripping with contempt. As for why Rupert changed his mind, just look at the great thingsthe Duskfang Pack has done lately. Do you honestly think a respected werewolf doctor would want to keep working for a pack like that?

You’re talking nonsense!I shook with anger. Everything I’d done had been to protect the honor of the Duskfang Pack!

Whether it’s nonsense or not, you know the truth deep down, she said, standing up and stepping toward me. Though she was shorter, her presence was suffocating.

Her gaze pierced me like a knife as she hissed, You came here to beg me to bring Rupert back, didn’t you? Fine. But why should I?

You little
