Chapter 207 It Really Is You

Roger’s POV:

Time seemed to stretch endlessly at that moment.

I remained frozen in my defensive posture, one hand still half raised as if to shove something away. But my eyes, eyes that moments ago had burned with fury, were now pinned in place, locked onto the frail child before me.

He was too much like him.

Even though he was so thin he barely resembled a person anymore, his cheeks were sunken like a little skeleton’s. Even though his skin was deathly pale, without the faintest hint of color. Even though he wore ill-fitting old clothes, making him look almost like a pitiful marionette.

Appearances can change, but scent cannot lie.

He carried Astra’s scent. It was tainted by a sharp, drug-like stench, but beneath it, the core remained unchanged. My instincts told me the truth. That scent belonged to Astra alone.

And those eyes. The silver-gray eyes are unique to the wolves of the Silverpeak Pack, bright as morning

Now, they brimmed with tears, filled with fear, grievance, and a cautious, almost desperate longing, staring straight at me without blinking.

My throat bobbed violently.

“A… A…”

I opened my mouth, my voice hoarse as if my throat were full of sand. The name hovered on my tongue, yet I didn’t dare let it fully escape.

I was shaking.

A battle-hardened Alpha baron, my entire body trembling uncontrollably.

Reason and emotion were locked in a fight to the death.

Reason screamed that this was false, that Astra was dead, that this was nothing more than an uncanny substitute.

Emotion roared back in defiance. This is him. This is my nephew.

He looked at me, at this familiar yet unfamiliar bearded man.

I knew what he was thinking.

I used to love scratching his face with my beard and loved tossing him into the air and catching him again. My voice was always loud, my laughter thunderous.

And yet just moments ago, I had tried to drive him away.

He sniffed, tears spilling down in large drops.

He struggled slightly.

With his eyes, he signaled to Cindy..

After a brief hesitation, she slowly set him down on the ground.

Astra stood on one leg, his body swaying.

His right leg screamed in pain after being curled up for so long, but he clenched his teeth and made no sound.

He shuffled forward a single small step.

Instinctively, I stepped back half a pace, afraid this was a dream that would shatter at the slightest touch.

He stopped.

He lifted one thin, withered hand and reached toward me, trembling.

Then he made a strange series of gestures.

He pointed at his mouth with his index finger, then mimed forcefully pulling out a tooth. After that, he brought his hands together, shaping them as if holding something and offering it forward.

When he finished, he lowered his head, his shoulders shaking violently as he cried in silence.

In that instant-

It felt as though someone had struck the crown of my head with a sledgehammer.

My whole body jolted. My eyes flew wide open, bloodshot veins spreading wildly.

That gesture.

A secret known only to the two of us.

“Wolf … wolf’s fang…”

A sound escaped my throat, a wounded beast’s whimper.

Two years ago, a month before the Silverpeak Pack was destroyed, I went to visit him.

Back then, he always wore that sapphire dagger at his waist, showing it off everywhere he went.

I laughed and flicked his forehead, then pointed to one of my own wolf fangs, slightly loose from battle, and whispered conspiratorially, “Kid, don’t get too proud. When your birthday comes next year, Uncle Roger will pull out my sharpest wolf fang and have a real ‘wolf-fang dagger’ made for you. That’s what a
