Every word Cindy said cut through me like a poisoned shard of ice–sharp, cold, and relentless.
She wasn’t scared? She actually wasn’t afraid of my threats?
Whether it was the pack’s banishment ritual or seizing all her personal belongings- punishments that would break any female werewolf–she called it a “shortcut to freedom“? She even warned that my decision could bring “consequences” to the pack?
Where did she get that kind of confidence?
Could it be… King Ryken really gave her some secret promise?
But she never outright said it! If she truly had the king’s backing, why didn’t she just use it against me?
My wolf spirit growled restlessly inside me. It sensed, just as I did, that beneath Cindy’s fearless calm was some power beyond our control.
Burning with rage, confusion, and a choking frustration with nowhere to go, I headed back to Evelyn’s temporary home.
She met me right away, noticing the storm cloud on my face, and offered me a cold glass of fruit wine with gentle care.
“Still bothered by Cindy?” Evelyn’s voice was soft and tempting, mixed with just enough
concern.
I told her everything–how I confronted Cindy, her calm yet stubborn tone, the hidden threats behind her words, and that strange, unnerving certainty she carried.
Evelyn thought for a moment, then said quietly, “Honestly, James, I think Cindy’s bluffing. She probably knows she can’t stay in the pack, but she’s not willing to lose that fortune. So she’s putting on a show, throwing out vague threats to scare you. She’s hoping you’ll hesitate and not really take action against her.”
My wolf spirit agreed. Evelyn’s theory made sense.
Cindy had always been clever. Maybe this was exactly what she was doing.
She didn’t dare tell me what King Ryken might actually do because she was just bluffing.

“She even suggested that kicking her out would bring bad consequences to the pack,” I said. still uneasy.
“Consequences?” Evelyn snorted, her voice dripping with scorn. “What kind of trouble could a she–wolf, who’s about to be kicked out by an Alpha, really cause? What, is she going to call some lost army from the extinct Silverpeak Pack to fight us? James, you’re the Alpha of the Duskfang Pack. Your will is the pack’s law! As long as we act decisively and with cause, even King Ryken won’t dare challenge a young, strong Alpha over some ‘irrelevant‘ she–wolf.”
She gently took my hand, her eyes glowing with temptation and promise. Think about it- your grandmother’s illness is urgent, and the pack’s money is tight. Cindy’s sitting on a fortune but refuses to help your grandma, ignoring the pack’s crisis. That’s betrayal enough to kick her out and take control of her inheritance.”
Takecontrol … a thought flickered through my mind.
Yes.” Evelyn’s eyes shone with greed and ruthlessness. “We have no choice but to take this desperate step to save your grandma and keep the pack alive. Once we get the Silverpeak Pack’s inheritance, we can offer a huge reward, bring in the world’s best doctors, and your grandma’s cure will be guaranteed! The pack’s money problems will be gone, and my Luna inauguration ceremony will go on in full glory. As for Cindy…”
She paused, her voice thick with temptation. “If she plays along, maybe we give her some back later. If not, that fortune is the price she pays for her betrayal. James, hesitation only breeds chaos. You’re the king of the Duskfang Pack, so show some Alpha strength!”
The bright future Evelyn painted felt like a deadly poison, quickly clouding my judgment.
Yes, if we got the Silverpeak inheritance, all our problems would seem to disappear.
What could Cindy’s vague “threats” do against total power and gain?
My wolf spirit howled with excitement inside me, craving that massive fortune and craving freedom from the uncontrollable problem Cindy had become.
“All right! Let’s do it!” A hard edge sparked in my eyes. Evelyn had completely won me over.
This was the path Cindy had chosen.
If she refused to take the easy way out, then she couldn’t blame me for making things hard.
