Chapter 231 Laying It All Out

Cindy’s POV:

“She wants to disgust me?” I frowned.

“Yes.” Prince Adam let out a cold laugh. “When Astra first got back, Princess Margaret tried to spread rumors and ruin his name. My father personally warned her, and she backed off for a while. But clearly, she’s at it again. Now, she’s trying to pull Duskfang Pack in to deal with you, and she might even try to get Blackstone Pack to resent you too.”

I froze.

So, there was a deeper scheme behind this.

But I quickly caught the main point. “You mean Carrie was ‘pushed’ onto James? Then, what about Blackstone Pack…”

“They don’t have much choice either.” Prince Adam’s tone was flat. “They can’t turn down Princess Margaret. Plus, Blackstone Pack really does want a foothold in the Royal Court. Everyone’s just getting what they need.”

I fell silent for a long time.

If that’s how things really were, then refusing their visit yesterday must’ve made me look petty.

It might even make Blackstone Pack think I turned them down out of jealousy or guilt, which could lead them to take it out on Astra in the future-after all, as heir to a ducal title, Astra will have to deal with these nobles sooner or later.

I wasn’t afraid of making enemies, but I couldn’t let my own grudges plant landmines in Astra’s future.

“Looks like it’s best that I lay it all out.”

Prince Adam looked at me, his golden eyes full of admiration and approval.

“If you want to do it, then do it.” He took my hand. “No matter what happens, I’ve got your back.”

“That’s my mate.”

Early the next morning, I sent Tom to personally deliver an invitation to Blackstone Pack’s hotel.

This time, my wording was extremely sincere. I explained that I didn’t receive them yesterday because Astra had just finished treatment and couldn’t receive guests. I also mentioned that I was hosting a simple luncheon today, inviting Madam Barbara and Madam Carrie to visit.

They came fast.

In less than an hour, Blackstone Pack’s carriage pulled up at the door.

Chapter 231 Laying It All Out

I made a point to change out of my usual dark formal dress and put on a simple, lake-blue gown. My hair was styled with just a single hairpin.

I didn’t want to show up in something extravagant and come across as insecure.

Barbara’s hair was white, but she stood straight as an arrow, eyes sharp as a hawk, her whole presence radiating the authority of someone who’s held power for years.

Standing beside her was Carrie, who was an unforgettable woman.

She was tall, with a broader frame than most women, dressed in a deep red riding outfit, and she even had a riding crop at her waist. Her features weren’t soft-her bone structure was strong, and her eyes held a blatant scrutiny and challenge.

“Duchess Spencer, how do you do?”

They both offered a shallow curtsy, nothing more than a formal nod.

“Please, have a seat.” I smiled and motioned for them to sit.

The tea had just been served when Carrie blurted out her question.

Her voice was a bit rough, almost metallic.

“Duchess Spencer.”

She didn’t even bother with small talk, getting right to the point. “You refused to see us yesterday, then suddenly sent an invitation today. I’m not one for beating around the bush. So, why the sudden change of heart?”

“Carrie!” Barbara rebuked her quietly. “Don’t be rude.”

But even as she scolded her, the old woman didn’t look away from my face. She clearly wanted the answer

too.

I set down my teacup, meeting their eyes with calm.

“Madam Carrie, you’re being direct with me, so I won’t hide anything from you either.”

I looked at Carrie. “Yesterday, I really did refuse you because Astra had just finished surgery and wasn’t up for visitors. I invited you both today because I know there are plenty of rumors out there-about me, about Duskfang Pack, and about James. Madam Carrie, you’re about to bond with James. I figured it’s better you hear the truth from me than a distorted version from someone else.”

She snorted. “So what are you trying to say? That James is a traitor? That he abandoned you? Are you secretly hoping I’ll feel sorry for you, or that I’ll back out of the marriage?”

“Neither.”

I shook my head, my voice steady and clear. “I left Duskfang Pack for two reasons.”

“First, James really did break our vows.” I raised one finger. “He promised I’d be his only Luna for life, but then he wanted to demote me to breeder for Evelyn’s sake. That’s betrayal. I couldn’t tolerate it.

“But more importantly…”

My gaze turned cold. The elders of Duskfang Pack-they didn’t just want me as a person. What they really wanted was to take the inheritance Silverpeak Pack left to me. That crossed my bottom line.”

At the word “inheritance, Barbara’s expression changed instantly,

As someone who managed a major family, she was keenly aware of the stakes when it came to interests like that.

“Is that true?” Barbara asked in a low voice. “They really tried to scheme for your dowry and inheritance?”

“It’s absolutely true.” I nodded. “That’s also why, when I severed our bond, I only took my own assets and never asked Duskfang Pack for a single cent in compensation. I wanted a clean break.”

Carrie frowned, as if she was still digesting everything.
