“The surgery went smoother than I expected.”

I took off my medical gloves, still stained with a bit of blood, and looked at the tray. On it were the dead, hardened tissues and swollen lymph nodes I had cut out of Astra’s throat. I couldn’t help but sigh.
Astra lay on the operating table, just waking up from the anesthesia.
His neck was wrapped in thick gauze to protect the fragile new tissue.
I was shocked when I found out Astra could already speak a few words.
That was way beyond what I expected. I guess Benjamin’s family line was just built different. His healing factor was stronger than a normal werewolf’s.
Honestly, Astra probably could have healed himself without the surgery eventually.
Still, to be safe, I had him go through with this final procedure.
At least the next time he talked, he wouldn’t sound like a grating mess.
“If he were a regular human, with vocal cords this badly damaged, he’d be mute for life,” I said to Cindy, who hadn’t left his side for a second. “But a werewolf’s regeneration-especially a pure-blood Alpha cub’s-is insanely strong. It’s something to be jealous of.”
I pointed at Astra’s throat. “I cut out all the damaged parts. Now that the toxins are gone, his healing factor is working overtime. It’s like a floodgate opened. New, healthy tissue and vocal cords are growing back as we speak.”
Cindy’s face, usually so tense, finally cracked. Fear and joy mixed together in her expression.
“So… he really can talk?” she asked softly, like speaking too loudly might break the good news.
“Of course,” I said confidently, patting my chest. “But the new vocal cords are as delicate as a baby’s. He needs time to adjust and practice. At first, his voice might be hoarse or even sound strange. That’s normal. Give him some time. After one night, with my special medicine, by tomorrow morning, you’ll hear the sweetest sound in the world.”
I watched as Cindy walked to the bedside, knelt down, and gently held Astra’s hand.

The badass Duchess on the battlefield now had tears in her eyes. She looked like any other loving aunt as she buried her face in the kid’s palm.
“Thank you, Rupert,” she said softly, her voice muffled.
I waved my hand and picked up my medical bag. “Don’t mention it. This kid is tough. His life is tough, too. Silverpeak Pack blood doesn’t die that easily.”
As I walked out of the room, I glanced back.
The last light of sunset came through the window and fell on the aunt and nephew.
For a second, it felt like seeing a tiny spark starting to glow in the ruins of the Silverpeak Pack.
It was weak, but stubborn. It refused to go out.
Cindy’s POV:
I didn’t sleep that night.
I stayed by Astra’s bed, listening to his breathing slowly go from rushed to calm.
Rupert’s medicine worked.
Late in the night, Astra seemed to start dreaming. His lips moved. The sound coming from his throat was no longer that scary hissing sound, but a few mumbles that actually had a tone to them.
The sound was faint, but it hit my ears like thunder.
That was a real voice!
Just before sunrise, Astra woke up.
The first thing he did was touch his throat.
He looked at me and opened his mouth, looking like he wanted to try speaking but was scared it wouldn’t work.
“Don’t be afraid,” I said, giving him an encouraging look. “Just try. Even if it’s just one sound.”
Astra took a deep breath. His chest heaved.
He focused on the muscles in his throat-muscles he used to know so well but had lost touch with for so long.
