In the main hall, Astra wore the green fitted robe brought by the Duskfang Pack maids. He still looked thin, but he sat up straight.
He watched as all his relatives rushed into the room.
“Un… Uncle…”
Astra looked at Roger and forced the word out.
The big, tower-like man’s knees gave out the moment he heard it. He dropped to the floor, covered his face, and cried.
“Yeah! I’m here!” Roger cried like a kid, crawling toward Astra. “You can talk… Thank God you can talk!”
“Grand … mother…”
Astra turned to the old lady, who was being helped in by Fiona.
She reached out with shaking hands, wanting to touch his face, but afraid she might hurt him.
“My boy… My sweet boy…” She pulled Astra into her arms. Her dry fingers gripped his shoulders tight, like he might disappear again if she let go. “As long as you’re safe, I can die with no regrets.”
The whole hall was filled with crying. But it was the happiest day they’d had in years.
Those tears were all about relief and the family finally being whole again.
I stood to the side, watching them, then quietly stepped out.
This moment belonged to them.
They had waited so long and gone through so much just to hear him speak again.
Night fell, and the Kazeks finally left, even though they didn’t want to leave.
The ducal estate became quiet again.
I went alone to the deepest part of the estate, to the family chapel where the old portraits

I pushed the door open. Candlelight flickered.

Right in the middle were the two paintings Adam had given me before he won his big battle.
In the paintings, my father sat tall on his silver wolf, looking strong and proud. My three brothers had their arms around each other, smiling brightly.
The artist was amazing. The look in their eyes made it feel like they never left-like they were just quietly watching us from the painting.
The flickering candlelight made their faces look almost real.
“Father, Mother, and my brothers,” I said, my voice shaking. “Did you see? Astra is back. He’s whole again. His legs are fixed. His voice is back. He can carry the weight of the Silverpeak Pack.”
I watched the dancing flame and their smiling faces.
The strength that had been holding me up finally loosened. What replaced it was deep exhaustion and loneliness.
“Father…” I whispered, my voice echoing in the empty room. “I’m so tired.
“For the three
past
I’ve lived like a madwoman. I forced myself to be strong, to be cold, years, and to play mind games with everyone. I was so scared that if I relaxed for even a second, our pack would be gone forever.
“I used to be your little princess. I’d cry for hours over a tiny scratch on my finger. But now? I wear claw gloves to kill. I fight old foxes in political games.”
I covered my face. Tears slipped through my fingers.
“When I got wronged before, I could run to my brothers and complain, or cry to Mom. Now, I’m the pillar of this family. I’m the one others rely on. I don’t even dare cry out loud because I’m afraid I’ll scare everyone.
“Now Astra is back, and I’m about to get married… Adam treats me well, but this is still a political deal. I don’t know what the future holds. I only ask … only ask that you watch over Astra. Keep him safe as he grows up.
“I don’t need him to bring the Silverpeak Pack back to its glory days or be some hero on the battlefield. I just want him to be a normal kid. No pain, no suffering. Find someone he loves, have a litter of little wolf cubs, and live a quiet life.

“As long as he’s okay, everything I’ve suffered is worth it.”

A soft sigh echoed in my
mind.
Diana appeared in my inner world. Her huge silver wolf body lay down, she brushed her phantom tail against my soul.
“Cindy, you’re always like this. In front of others, you’re the unbreakable Valkyrie and the ruthless Duchess. You wear your armor and your mask, and you never back down, even when you’re bleeding.
“Only I know. Only I know how many wounds are hidden under that shell.
“You’ve been pretending to be strong this whole time. From the day Silverpeak Pack fell, you turned yourself into a blade. But even a blade can go dull. It can break.”
There was pain in Diana’s voice. “But it’s okay now. Astra, that little wolf cub, is back-your legacy is secure. And Adam may be a bit stupid sometimes, but he’s a reliable anchor. You can finally … let go of the burden, even if it’s just for a second to catch your breath.”
Hearing Diana say that just made me cry even harder.
She was right.
I didn’t have to carry all that despair alone anymore.
I stayed in the family chapel all night.
I talked to the paintings of my dad and brothers for hours, letting out all the hurt, the fear, and how much I missed them from the last three years.
I stayed until the sky turned pale, until the last candle burned out.
