“Cindy! Get out here!”

Evelyn’s screaming was super annoying in the cold morning air. She was acting like a psycho, banging on the ducal estate’s front gates like she would never get tired.

I was sitting in the chapel. Hearing the noise outside, I sighed.

“Ms. Cindy, Mr. Astra isn’t awake yet. If that crazy woman keeps this up, what if…” Jewel came over, holding a set of clothes.

“I’ll handle it.”

I stood up, put on a casual white dress, and wrapped a silver fox-fur cloak around my shoulders.

When the side door of the main hall opened, cold wind rushed in.

Evelyn stood at the bottom of the steps. She was clearly dressed up today.

She was wearing a fancy dark red dress-the color she used to love back when she was a “Valkyrie” because it looked like blood and fire.

But now, she was so thin and hunched over that the dress just hung off her. She looked like a skeleton wearing a costume.

She had a thick black veil over her face to hide her scars, leaving only her bloodshot eyes visible.

When she saw me, she didn’t bow or show any respect. She just glared at me, full of hate and a sick kind of excitement.

“So you finally came out?” Evelyn’s voice was hoarse, damaged from her injured throat. “I thought you’d hide in there like a coward forever.”

I pulled my cloak tighter and stood at the top of the stairs, looking down at her.

“It’s so early, I thought someone just forgot to leash their stray dog,” I said, my voice totally flat. “Evelyn, shouldn’t you be back at the Duskfang Pack playing your role as a breeder? Why are you here acting crazy?”

“Cindy Spencer!”

She spat my name through clenched teeth.

She stepped forward and pointed right at my face. “Stop acting all high and mighty! I’m here to ask you one thing: are you happy now? Think you won?”

I raised an eyebrow and said nothing.

“Do you know James is getting married?!” Evelyn suddenly shouted, like she was announcing the biggest news in history. “He’s marrying Madam Carrie from the Blackstone Pack! A real big-pack woman! Richer than you, more powerful than you! The Duskfang Pack is about to rise!”

Watching her lose it, I felt only pity.

“The whole Royal Court knows about it,” I said calmly. “So what?”

“So what?!” My calmness set her off. She screamed, “How can you be so chill? Aren’t you jealous? Don’t you hate it?”

She kept firing questions at me, like she needed to see me break down to feel better.

“If Prince Adam wasn’t in the picture, would you say you don’t love James? You don’t regret breaking the bond? You really don’t feel like your heart’s being cut when you see him marry someone else?!

“Cindy, stop pretending! You’re just a pathetic loser who got dumped! Everything you have was given to you by men! You’re jealous of me! You’ve always been jealous because I took James from you, right?!”

Her voice was hysterical, echoing down the empty street.

I just watched her go crazy until she finally ran out of breath and stopped yelling.

“Done?”

I took a step forward, my eyes turning cold and sharp like a blade. I looked at her like she was a pile of trash.
