I sneered, tightened my grip on her arm, holding her in place. “Being ugly isn’t your fault. But having a rotten heart is a sin.
“Come with me.”
I dragged her along like a bag of trash and headed straight for the chapel.
“No! What are you doing?! Help!” Evelyn fought back as hard as she could, but against my Alpha strength, it was useless.
I dragged her into the chapel and stopped right in front of the two massive paintings.
“Kneel.”
I kicked the back of her knee.
Thud. Evelyn crashed down onto the hard floor.
She looked up in terror and met the powerful, bright eyes of my family in the paintings.
Outside, the dark sky suddenly started to snow.
Big flakes blew in through the open doors and landed on Evelyn’s shaking shoulders, sending a sharp chill through her.
I grabbed her dry, messy hair and forced her head up so she had to look at the portraits,
“Open your damn eyes and look at them!”
I pointed at the first painting, my voice rough and shaking. “This old man on the silver wolf- that’s my father, Benjamin, the Alpha of the Silverpeak Pack. He spent 200 years guarding Northmere, and he never let a single vampire cross into our land!”
Evelyn was shaking all over. Her eyes kept darting away. She didn’t dare look at the painting.
“Now look at this one!”

handsome, and had their whole lives ahead of them. They should’ve had bright futures. They should’ve married, had kids, and carried on the Silverpeak bloodline.”
Tears burned in my eyes, but none fell.
“But because of you. Because of you, Evelyn-”
I slammed her head down toward the floor. “You slaughtered prisoners and massacred a whole village at the Battle of Evernight Gorge. To satisfy your sick craving for cruelty, you tortured the vampire’s seventh prince to death! You thought you covered it up? You thought you were proving something?
“You idiot!
“Franklin gathered his army for revenge, but he couldn’t find you, coward! So he thought Silverpeak Pack did it. He poured all his rage onto our territory!
“My father and my brothers fought to protect our territory. To protect our people. With no reinforcements at all, they fought for three days and three nights. In the end, every single warrior died. Silverpeak Pack was wiped out in one night.
“That night, the sky was red from the fires, and the ground was soaked in blood! My mother, my sisters-in-law, the kids who hadn’t even grown up… they all died!”
“And all of it was because of you! Because of your selfish, petty greed!”
Evelyn collapsed on the floor, her face white as paper. Her lips shook. “N-no… I didn’t know… I really didn’t know it would turn out like this…”
“You didn’t know?”
I sneered and kicked her shoulder again, knocking her flat on the ground.
“Does ‘I didn’t know’ make up for hundreds of lives? Does ‘I didn’t know’ bring my dead family back to life?”
My voice broke, full of pain and fury, but not a single tear fell.
My tears had dried up three years ago on that night.
“When I learned the truth, I wanted to cut you into pieces. But I held back.”
