Cindy’s POV:

My voice echoed through the empty chapel. Every word hit Evelyn like a judge’s hammer.

Under my words-and the pressure she couldn’t control-Evelyn finally broke.

She curled up by the door, holding her head and sobbing uncontrollably.

Eventually, she ended up sitting in the snow outside the chapel like a pile of boneless meat.

The snow started falling harder, covering her in a thin layer of white frost.

Her eyes were blank. She muttered to herself, like she was trapped in a terrible memory.

I looked at her with no pity.

“Jewel, the bill,” I said coldly.

Jewel came over right away with the small ledger.

“Evelyn, since you don’t want James to pay, you’ll pay,” I said, pointing at the bill. “You broke a vase. Five silver coins. Pay up.”

Evelyn slowly looked up, still dazed.

She checked her clothes. The old fancy dress had no pockets. She had rushed out and didn’t bring any money.

“I… I don’t have any money on me…” Her voice shook.

“No money?”

I laughed coldly. “No money, and you still dared to smash my things? Tom!”

Tom stepped forward at once, holding a prepared IOU and a box of ink.

“Thumbprint,” Tom said flatly. “Debts must be paid. That’s the rule. Ms. Rusell.”

Evelyn stared at the IOU, then at my deadly stare.

Trembling, she held out her hand. It was covered in scars.

She dipped her thumb in the ink and pressed it onto the paper.

The red thumbprint looked like a drop of blood.

“Get out.”

I tucked the IOU away, not wanting to look at her for another second. “Don’t get my floors dirty.”

Evelyn stumbled to her feet. She didn’t dare look at the paintings or me again.

Like a beaten stray, she stumbled out into the heavy snow, looking pathetic and broken.

When she disappeared through the doorway, my tense body finally relaxed.

A deep wave of exhaustion hit me.

“Your Grace…” Tom walked over, looking worried. “Are you okay?”

I shook my head and forced a bitter smile.

“I’m fine. I just feel … this is all pointless.”

I turned and looked at the empty hall.

It used to be so lively here.

My father’s loud laughter. My mother’s nagging. My brothers fooling around… It all felt like it was still echoing in the room.

But now, it was just me, alone with a house full of portraits and memorial tablets.

So what if I beat Evelyn? So what if I crushed her?

My family was never coming back.

That deep loneliness washed over me like a tide.

“Your Grace, you still have us. And… Mr. Astra,” Tom said softly.

Astra.

Hearing that name warmed my heart.

“Where is he?”

“In the study, practicing his writing.”

I pulled myself together, wiped my eyes, and headed toward the study.

I pushed the door open, and warm air rushed toward me.

The fireplace was going, and Astra was sitting straight at the desk, totally focused on his writing.

He was wearing the new green robe. Even though he was still skinny, you could already see that tough Silverpeak look in his eyes.

When he heard the noise, he looked up right away.

His eyes lit up when he saw it was me, and he put down his pen and stood up quickly.

“Aunt… Aunt Cindy…”

He could say the words smoothly now.

He must have heard the commotion outside. His small face was tense, his eyes full of worry.

I walked over and ruffled his hair.

“It’s okay,” I said softly. “The bad person is gone.”
