Chapter 241 Is This My Karma?
James’s POV:
I slumped into the chair and tossed the IOU across the table.

Grandma picked it up. One look, and she started shaking with anger. She slammed her cane on the floor. “This is a disaster! That girl is a curse! How dare she go pick a fight with Cindy? Is she trying to get us all killed?!
“She did it on purpose!” Grandma screamed. “She knew you were going to marry Madam Carrie from the Blackstone Pack. She got jealous! She wanted to make a scene, push Cindy to step in, and ruin the wedding! That toxic woman! If she can’t be Luna, she’s going to make your life a living hell!”
I listened to her rant, but I just felt empty inside.
Ruin the wedding?
In the past, I might’ve been angry.
But now, when I thought about marrying Carrie-the widow everyone said had never had kids –and then thought about Cindy, who used to be so sweet to me but was now way out of my league, I felt no excitement about the future at all.
“Just let it go,” I said, my voice sounding rough. “Whatever. It’s not like I have anything left to lose anyway.”
Kenzi said coldly inside my head, “Wrong. You still have your dignity. And you’re about to lose that, too.”
Late that night, I sat in my study without turning on the lights.
I sat there in the darkness, listening to the wind howl outside.
Kenzi curled up in a corner of my mind, like a wounded, lonely wolf, whimpering with regret every now and then.
Grandma’s words from earlier kept echoing. She wanted to go to the backyard and interrogate Evelyn, demanding to know if she threatened Cindy or tried to sabotage my wedding.
I stopped her.

“With Cindy’s personality, there’s no way Evelyn could ever threaten her.”
Saying those words made my heart ache.

Yeah. Cindy was the Duchess Protector of the Realm, a commander with real power, and the one Prince Adam loved.
In front of her, Evelyn was like an ant trying to trip an elephant-ridiculous and pathetic.
My mind kept replaying everything from the past few days.
Princess Margaret personally set me up and shoved the widow from the Blackstone Pack onto me. Prince Adam gave up his military power just to marry Cindy.
One thing after another wove into a huge net, trapping me in and forcing me to see how small and stupid I was.
“Prince Adam … he really gave up military power for Cindy?”
I asked myself. I also asked Kenzi, “If it were you, would you go that far for a woman?”
Kenzi stayed quiet for a long time before answering in a low voice, “If it were the old Cindy, who only knew how to serve you tea, then no. But this Cindy? The one who can take down Southreach by herself and earn King Ryken’s praise? James, any male would go crazy for a woman like her.”
Yeah.
She changed.
Or maybe she never changed. I was just blind and never saw the sharp edge hidden under her gentle look.
I remembered her standing on the city wall in Southreach, wearing silver armor, calm and in control. I remembered her turning into a silver wolf and ripping through the vampires.
She was so bright, so strong.
And me?
For so-called true love, for Evelyn-a woman full of lies, greedy and cruel-I pushed this gem
with my own hands.

Just thinking her name made me feel sick to my stomach.

I used to think she was special. I thought her wild streak and her “never give up” attitude were attractive.
But now that the filter was gone, all that was left was the ugly truth.
She tortured prisoners at Evernight Gorge and got the Silverpeak Pack wiped out. She was so desperate for glory at Southreach that she got 300 of our comrades killed. At home, all she did was throw tantrums and fight for power. What else was she good for?
“She’s not even worth one of Cindy’s fingernails,” Kenzi said bluntly.
“Cindy is patient, open-minded, and knows the bigger picture. Evelyn is just selfish and small-
threw minded. James, you traded all your military honors for a disaster, and you
treasure.”
