After two days of feeling like I was living in a graveyard, I couldn’t take it anymore. Almost without thinking, I walked toward the small side room in the backyard-where Evelyn stayed.
Honestly, it was more like her prison.
The moment I opened the door, a strong smell of medicine hit me.
Evelyn was sitting on the bed, her face covered with a thick black veil. Only her eyes showed.
She wasn’t screaming or smashing things like before. She just sat there, still as a statue that had lost its soul.
When she saw me, something flickered in her eyes. Then they turned cold again.
“What do you want?” Her voice was rough from her damaged throat. “Are you here to laugh at me? Or to tell me when I need to move out for your new Luna?”
I sighed and pulled over a chair. For once, I didn’t lose my temper.
“People from Silverpeak Pack came,” I said quietly. “About that vase you broke. I paid them back for you.”
Evelyn’s entire body went stiff.
Then she let out a short, sharp laugh. “Heh… You really think you’re such a romantic, don’t you? Even now, you’re still trying to look like the good guy in front of your ex-wife? You want
for you?” her to think you’re responsible? Or feel sorry
“I just don’t want to owe her anything,” I said, frowning.
“Don’t want to owe her?” Evelyn suddenly turned her head. Her bloodshot eyes locked onto me. “You don’t owe her? James, stop pretending. You’ve been distracted for days. You’re thinking about her, aren’t you?”
Inside me, Kenzi let out an annoyed growl because she had totally called us out.
I wanted to argue, but my throat felt blocked. No words came out.
Seeing me like this, her eyes filled with even more scorn.

“Do you know what Cindy said to me that day?”

She suddenly spoke in a mocking tone, copying Cindy’s cold, distant voice. “She said, ‘Who does James think he is? To me, he’s not even worth thinking about.”
Boom.
The words hit me like a hammer to the head.
I jerked my head up and stared at Evelyn in disbelief. “She … she said that?”
“Of course.” Evelyn smiled cruelly, enjoying my pain. “She also said your so-called ‘general’ title is a joke to her. She’s a duchess now. A commander. You’re not even fit to shine her shoes. She doesn’t even bother hating you, because you’re not worth it.”
“Enough!”
I jumped to my feet, shaking all over. Inside my head, Kenzi let out a miserable howl-the sound of my pride being crushed.
“Why are you telling me this?!” I screamed, my eyes bloodshot. “Are you trying to kill me?”
“I want you to wake up!”
Evelyn shouted back. Tears slipped out from under her veil. “James, you regret it, don’t you? You’re thinking that if you hadn’t used your military honors to marry me, if you had stayed with Cindy, you’d be the duchess’s husband. Everyone would envy you. You’d have kids. The Duskfang Pack would be powerful. Isn’t that right?!”
Every word cut deep.
She was ripping open the exact scars I was too afraid to look at myself.
“Too bad it’s too late,” Evelyn laughed, bitter and unhinged. “Now every Alpha in the world wants to mark Cindy. She’s the jewel of the kingdom. Adam’s darling. And you were the one who pushed her away! You handed her to someone else with your own hands!”
“Shut up! Shut up!” I covered my cars, not wanting to hear anymore.
“Why should I?” Evelyn cried, her tears falling as her voice grew louder. “James, I hate this, too! I was your Luna! I wanted us to have a good life together! But look at me-I’ve become this, and all you can think about is her! You think you’re punishing me? You’re punishing yourself!”
She pointed at the door, her voice sharp. “Get out! Get the hell out of here! Take your regret
this-no and your what-ifs and go marry that Blackstone Pack widow! But let me tell you
