King Ryken was holding onto a painting like a wolf guarding its prey. Morton tried to get closer, but King Ryken’s hand blocked him.
“Step back. Don’t crowd me,” King Ryken growled, like an old wolf guarding a prized meal. “This one runs deep. I’m not done enjoying it. What could you possibly understand?”
Morton scratched his head frantically. “Your Majesty, you’ve been at it for half an hour! Mr. Silva’s pieces are all about spirit and charm. Please, just let me see one!”
“See what? Even if you look, you can’t afford it.” King Ryken snorted.
Morton sputtered, then turned to Oliver with a pleading look. “Mr. Silva, be fair. We can’t let His Majesty take everything. We’d also like to collect a couple.”
Immediately, the nobles nearby perked up, eyes shining.
Oliver’s paintings were priceless-worth more than gold.
Before, they could barely dream of buying one. Now they were right there. Who could resist?
“Mr. Silva, tell us the price for ‘Lone Howl Under the Moon”!”
“I’ll take ‘A Wolf Among Hyenas’! Name it, I’ll pay!”
Facing the rush, Oliver just smiled calmly, folded his cane, and pointed at me.
“Ladies and gentlemen, you’re asking the wrong person,” he said, voice clear across the hall. “I’m only borrowing my junior’s spot for this show. Since these are hanging at the Silverpeak Ducal Estate, they’re my gift to her. Who gets them, and for how much, is up to Duchess Spencer.”
Whoosh!
Every eye swung toward me, spotlighting me instantly.
Those nobles who usually acted distant or even cold toward me now had eyes shining with eagerness, flattery, and maybe a little pleading.
Even Queen Isabella, who had been looking so high and mighty just a moment ago, stop glancing my way, her expression unreadable.

My senior had done me a huge favor.

He basically told everyone that if they wanted a painting, they had to come to me first.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm the rush of excitement in my chest.
I knew I couldn’t charge some crazy price. That would make the Silverpeak Pack seem greedy and ruin Oliver’s good intentions.
I wasn’t after money-I wanted respect and reputation.
I stepped forward, faced King Ryken and the nobles, and gave a calm, generous smile.
“Since my senior left the choice to me, I won’t keep it to myself.”
I raised my voice. “My senior paints when fate and timing say so. Your appearances are a favor to the Silverpeak Pack, to His Highness, and to Her Majesty. Talking about money feels wrong.”
Everyone held their breath, worried I’d say the paintings weren’t for sale.
“Here’s the deal.” I held up one finger. “No matter the size or subject, every painting here today costs 100 gold coins. Pick whatever you want. First come, first served.”
The hall went wild.
