“You shut everyone out for that man. You turned yourself into an island,” Oliver said, every word cutting deep. “Feelings fade if you don’t tend to them. People won’t just rush back the moment you suddenly remember them.”

Guilt crashed over me and pulled me under.

He was right.

I was heartless.

For the sake of playing the “perfect wife” and avoiding suspicion, I had deliberately stayed away from the friends and mentors who once fought beside me.

I assumed they’d wait forever, but I forgot that hearts could cool.

“I was wrong…” I lowered my head. Big tears hit the snow, leaving tiny dents. “I’m an idiot … I don’t deserve to be part of the academy…”

In the end, only Oliver and Astra were still with me.

“Alright, stop crying,” Oliver said lightly, as if it didn’t matter. “Who knows? Maybe Master will send an urgent order and drag me back as well.”

“No!” I snapped my head up any elders left!”

and grabbed his sleeve. “You can’t go! If you leave, I won’t have

He looked at me, right on the edge of falling apart, sighed, and ruffled my hair.

“Relax. I’m your senior. Your dad is gone, so it’s my job to walk you to Adam. Sounds right, doesn’t it?”

The moment he said that, I broke down and threw myself into his arms, crying hard.

I promised myself then.

Once the ceremony ended, I would take Adam back to the academy.

I would apologize. I would stick to them shamelessly if I had to. Little by little, I’d fix what I’d

broken.

Today, the sky was dark again.

The clouds hung low and heavy, like they might fall at any moment-just like my mood.

Oliver still left.

Something urgent came up at the academy. He had to deal with it and couldn’t wait for the wedding in five days.

I walked him to the city gate. The wind blew snow straight into my face, sharp and stinging.

“Go back,” Oliver said as he mounted his horse smoothly, his blue robe snapping in the wind. “Don’t look so sad. A wedding is supposed to be happy. I won’t be there, but my gift will.”

He pulled a wrinkled receipt from his coat and pressed it into my hand.

“This is your gift,” he said with a mischievous grin. “Pick it up at Kalia’s Goldsmiths, the biggest gold workshop around. I’ve been saving money to make that for ages.”

He didn’t stay. With a flick of the reins, he disappeared into the snow.

I stood there clutching the receipt until my hands and feet went numb.

“Duchess Spencer, we should head back,” Tom reminded me in a low voice. “We’re returning to the Silverpeak Pack tomorrow to prepare for the ceremony.”

I nodded and stepped into the carriage,

Kalia’s Goldsmiths was the oldest gold workshop in the kingdom, known for skilled work and bold new designs.

I imagined someone like Oliver choosing something graceful and poetic. Maybe a flower- shaped hairpin. Maybe a fine necklace.

But when the owner smiled widely and opened a red-lacquered wooden box in front of me, I

went stiff.

Inside was a

huge gold bracelet.

It was thick and heavy, at least half a pound.

The design was painfully simple and crude-just a solid strip of gold bent into a circle, without even a pattern, only engraved with chunky words “Good Luck” on top.

“Uh…” My lips twitched as I lifted it. It nearly slipped from my hand. “My senior really ordered this?”

“Yes!” The owner grinned. “Mr. Silva said fancy designs are pointless. Solid gold is what matters. He said you’ve got a household to manage. If things ever get rough, you can pawn this anywhere. That’s the most practical thing!”

I didn’t know what to say.
