Even though the old Duskfang Pack mansion was decorated with colorful banners and wedding cloth, the whole place still felt broken down and sad.

I stood in front of a huge floor mirror and stared at the man inside it. He wore a dark velvet suit with the pack badge on his chest, but his face looked tired and empty. I barely recognized myself.

This was the third time I was about to stand before the temple.

The first time was when I bonded with Cindy. Back then, I was truly happy.

Even though it was a pack alliance marriage, I respected her. She came from a noble family, and she was a beautiful silver wolf. That day, riding my horse, I felt like the most admired knight in the whole kingdom.

The second time was when I bonded with Evelyn. At that time, I was wild with passion.

I thought I had found my soulmate, so I tore apart my sacred vows with Cindy. I believed I was chasing freedom and true love.

But this time, marrying Carrie from the Blackstone Pack, I had no choice at all.

We had no love. We were only doing this to pay debts and survive.

“James, does the suit fit?” Grandma walked in with her cane. Her face was full of fake smiles. “I had the best tailor in the city rush it. It cost 300 gold coins! It’s not as grand as when you married Cindy, but at least it looks decent.”

“Decent?” I gave a bitter laugh and looked at the rough stitching on my sleeve, “Grandma, does the Duskfang Pack still have any dignity left?”

Grandma’s face froze. Then she straightened up and tapped her cane hard. “How can you say that? Once Carrie comes in and brings those chests of gold and the mercenary contracts from Blackstone Pack, we’ll have money again! We’ll fix the estate, rebuild our soldiers, and we’ll be glorious again!”

I felt cold inside as I watched her greedy expression.

She only cared about money and power. She didn’t care who I married. As long as wealth came with her, she would happily push me into it.

I looked around and asked, “Why is the banquet hall decorated so poorly? There aren’t even fresh roses. It’s all dried flowers and ivy filling space.”

Grandma sighed. “We can’t help it. The treasury is empty. We hoped to rely on your army pay and compensation, but it all went to paying Evelyn’s debts. This is the best we could do after Hannah and I pawned our jewelry.

“Once Carrie arrives, things will be better,” Grandma said, trying to comfort me. “I heard she’s bringing 68 fully armed riders to escort her gifts. The cash alone is 10,000 gold coins! After that, we won’t need to worry anymore.”

Hearing those numbers only made me feel more humiliated.

I was a general of the kingdom, yet now I had fallen so low that I had to sell my marriage to keep the pack alive.

“I’m going to check on Evelyn.”

I couldn’t listen anymore. I made an excuse and escaped the suffocating hall.

The north side of the estate was now Evelyn’s place.
