At this moment, the Blackstone Pack’s luxury estate in the kingdom was also buzzing with activity.
I sat in front of a huge vanity mirror while maids applied expensive makeup to my face and placed a heavy golden headpiece on my hair.
I was no longer young. Fine lines showed at the corners of my eyes. But years of holding power had given me a sharp confidence and authority.
I was 36 years old.
As a widow who had lost her husband and carried the pack’s business alone, being able to marry a younger kingdom general was something many people called “lucky.” Even if James had fallen from glory, others still thought I was lucky, that I was the one marrying up.
But I knew the truth. This was only a deal.
I was doing this for my pack, so Blackstone Pack could gain a place in the kingdom and stop being looked down on by the old noble families.
And James was doing it for my money and
my mercenaries.
“Madam Carrie, everything is ready,” my personal maid, Hazel Wendham, walked in and spoke respectfully. “68 fully armed riders are waiting outside. They have the finest armor and the best horses. The trumpeters and flag bearers are also prepared.”
I raised an eyebrow, staring at my reflection. “68? Are you sure that’s more than Cindy’s?”
Hazel nodded firmly. “Yes. I paid to find out. Cindy’s escort has the Royal Guard for show, but the number is set at 64. That’s the standard for a duchess. We may not have a title, but we have money. Our mercenaries answer to no one. Those extra four are meant to press her down.”
I nodded in satisfaction and stood up. My heavy velvet wedding robe, threaded with gold, dragged across the floor.
“Good.”
I picked up a jewel-studded riding whip, and my eyes sharpened.
“Cindy…” I repeated her name.

Even though she acted gracefully at the restaurant and even praised James as a fine warrior, I still felt irritated.
She was James’s ex-wife. His former Luna.
And Hannah spoke as if it were certain. She claimed Cindy still couldn’t let James go, and everything she did now was just revenge.
I didn’t believe Cindy could truly be so carefree. Women were always different inside than what they showed outside.
