It was almost the end of the year. The kingdom’s biggest holiday-the Moon Goddess Festival-was just around the corner.
The Moon Goddess Festival was created to thank the Moon Goddess for giving werewolves their strength. It was just as important to us as Christmas was to humans.
The entire Royal Court was filled with holiday cheer. The streets were covered in lights and ribbons. Vendors were everywhere, selling festival decorations.”
Because of the holiday, the High Council closed early.
Adam didn’t have to deal with official matters today. For once, he was free.
“Cindy, what are you planning today?” Adam asked, sitting at the table and cutting into his roast beef.
“I want to take Astra back to the Silverpeak Pack,” I said after a sip of milk. “The Moon Goddess Festival is almost here. I’d like to check on everyone there. And I want to talk with Dean Dross and the others about the ceremony. After all, this will be Silverpeak’s first festival since the pack was rebuilt. I want it to be grand.”
“Alright. I’ll go with you.” Adam set down his knife and fork.
Just as we were about to leave, a familiar, noisy voice came from outside.
“Cindy! I’m here!”
A red blur rushed in. It was Viola.
Stick followed behind her, still chewing on a blade of grass, looking like he hadn’t fully woken up.
“Viola?” I stared at her in surprise. “Why are you here? Weren’t you staying at Silverpeak Castle wi and the others to wait for me?”
At the mention of his name, Viola’s smile stiffened. Her eyes shifted away.
She walked over and grabbed my hand. She hesitated for a moment before speaking carefully. “Cindy, as be mad, okay? I actually come to talk about this.”
My heart skipped. A bad feeling rose inside me. “What happened?”
“Dean Dross and Elder Selvaryn …” Viola said slowly, almost stumbling over her words. “They left Northmere yesterday evening quietly. They’ve already returned to Moonridge.”
“What?!”
I shot to my feet, staring at her in disbelief.
Yesterday evening?
That was right after I came back from Silverpeak’s territory. They left without even saying goodbye?

“How could they do that?” My voice shook as I bit my lip “They promised they wouldn’t sneak away again. How could they break their word like that?”
I had thought things were different this time. I believed that our reunion erased the distance between us.
I thought they finally saw me again as the Cindy who still needed their care.
But eventually, they left just like before, quietly, without a word, leaving me behind.
“Oh, Cindy, don’t cry!”
