“What about you?” I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes and looked at Viola. “Why didn’t you go back with them?”

Viola grinned. She let go of me, dropped into a chair, and grabbed an apple from the table, taking a big bite.

“Fern arranged it,” she said while chewing. “She said you just married into the royal family. Even though Adam is protecting you, the palace is full of tricky politics and messy drama. She was worried you’d have to face it alone. So, she left me here to help you out. I can run errands. And I can use my information network to gather news for you.”

I looked at her, my heart warming-and yet feeling a little heavy.

Viola was like a werewolf born in the wilderness. She hated places like the Royal Court. Too many schemes. Too many fake smiles. Back at the academy, she never even bothered memorizing slogans, let alone dealing with clever noble ladies.

“Viola …” I walked over and hugged her again. My voice was soft. “If you don’t like the Royal Court, why stay and suffer for me? I’m not a child. I can handle myself.”

“Well, it’s just Fern’s idea.”

Viola looked a little embarrassed in my arms. She cleared her throat and said, “Dross gave me a ‘secret order’ before he left,” she said, half joking, half serious.

“A secret order?” I asked.

She leaned close to my ear and lowered her voice. “He said the Royal Court may be a mess, but there are still some fine young werewolf nobles around. He told me to look around. If I find one I like, just knock him out, mark him, and drag him back to the academy. He called it ‘keeping the good stuff in the family.”

“Pfft!”

I laughed at her bandit logic. My tears were still wet, but I couldn’t help it.

That was exactly the kind of thing Dross would say.

In his mind, if the academy wanted something, you just grabbed it. End of story.

“Don’t you dare cause trouble,” I said, smiling as I pinched her cheek. “The nobles at the Royal Court aren’t like the boys at the academy. They won’t survive your beatings. If you really like someone, tell me. I can speak as a duchess. Or I’ll have Adam step in and arrange a proper match. We’ll do it the right way. No need for those wild, forceful marking tricks.”

“Ugh. That sounds like a hassle. Too many steps,” Viola said, rolling her eyes. “Knocking someone out is quicker,”

I shook my head at her stubborn, forever-a-bandit attity de. However, the empty feeling in my chest left behind by our teachers’ departure slowly faded because of her teasing.

It was beneficial to have a friend like her.

While Cindy and Viola were in the hall, having a heartfelt reunion and apparently discussing how to “take some poor nobleman.” I was in my study with Julian, holding an important

gotiation with the young man called Stick.

I sat behind my desk and watched him carefully. He stood there in a loose, almost lazy posture, a blade of grass still hanging from his mouth like it had grown there.

At first glance, he looked careless. Unbothered. But beneath the messy hair that half-covered his face, his eyes were sharp. Watchful. Like a werewolf ready to move at any second.
