Her memory was stuck on last year, when James had just betrayed me, and my life was falling apart.

She was on her deathbed-so thin from all the suffering. But the first thing she worried about after waking up was worry about me. The daugher of her old friend. She was worried I’d end up as miserable as she did.

That pure, unconditional care felt like a soft knife, cutting straight through the strong front I had been holding up.

“No… Sephiria, no.”

I gripped her hand tight and leaned my forehead against her knuckles, crying my eyes out. “I’m fine. I didn’t let them treat me like that.”

I looked up, wiped my tears, and forced the brightest smile I could manage, hoping to chase away the worry in her heart.

“I broke my bond with that loser James ages ago I’m a Duchess Protector of the Realm now! And… I’m married!”

I quickly shared the good news, hoping it would lift her spirits. “I married Prince Adam! He treats me well and always protects me. No one dares bully me anymore. You can relax.”

Sephiria froze. A hint of disbelief flashed in her loudy eyes.

“Prince… Adam?” she murmured, like she couldn’t believe such a fairy-tale ending.

“It’s true!” Viola jumped in, speaking loudly to confirm it. “Cindy is telling the truth! I saw Prince Adam swear his loyalty to her in the temple with my own eyes! We crushed James a long time ago!”

Katie wiped her tears and added from the side, ady Sephiria, it’s true. Duchess Spencer came today on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen to visit you. She’s the most important woman in the Royal Court now,”

Hearing that, Sephiria’s stiff body finally relaxed

Two clear tears slowly slid down from the cornes of her sunken eyes.

Relief filled her voice. “Knowing you’ve found a good husband… I can finally rest in peace…

“Don’t say that!” I quickly cut her off.

Sephiria shook her head. She gently held my fingers, her eyes full of guilt and sadness.

Cindy, I’m so sorry… I’ve failed your late mother…”

Her voice trembled. “Back then, your mother, Eleanor, and I were best friends. We treated each other like sisters and promised we’d always look out for one another. But… when Silverpeak Pack was destroyed, when you were being mistreated by the Nolans, I couldn’t even stand up for you. I couldn’t help you at all..

“I’m useless… Every single night in this monastery, I dream about Eleanor. She blames me…”

“No! It’s not your fault!” My heart ached as I tried to comfort her. “I didn’t let anyone know what was happening! Your situation was already so hard back then. Leanna controlled everything. You could barely protect yourself. How could anyone blame you?”

I tried my best to soothe her, terrified she’d spiral into that deep sadness again.

Katie saw Sephiria getting worked up and noticed her breathing was getting fast, so she stepped in.

“Your Grace, Lady Sephiria can’t keep talking. Her heart can’t handle it.”

Katie quickly took out a syringe with a sedative and injected it into Sephiria’s arm. “I have to put her back to sleep, or she’ll use up the last bit of strength she has left.”

As the medicine took effect, Sephiria’s eyelids slowly grew heavy, and she fell asleep again.

I stood beside the bed, staring at her thin, lifeless face. The anger in my chest burned like fire.

Bang!

A loud bang echoed through the room.

I turned and saw Viola standing there with a furious look. She had just smashed the only rotten wooden table in the room with one puncl.

Wood chips were scattered.

“I can’t take this anymore,” Viola said through gritted teeth.

Her red hair moved slightly even though there was no wind in the room-she was close to
