The study was lit by candlelight. The flames flickered, stretching my shadow long and short across the walls. It looked just like my restless wolf spirit, unable to stay still.

I sat quietly in a dark wooden chair. My fingers were clenched so tight that my knuckles had turned white. Between them, I held a narrow strip of parchment.

One corner of the parchment touched the candle flame. Fire licked along the edge, but I felt no heat at all. The words written on it burned far worse than fire. They seared into my mind like a red-hot iron.

“Evelyn slaughtered a surrendered village. Methods are brutal. High casualties.”

This was a top-secret message sent days ago by my eldest senior from the academy, Oliver Silva. It had traveled thousands of miles on a special messenger bird.

Unlike Fern, who worked through informal channels, Oliver was a famous werewolf scholar known across the continent. His information network was fast and frighteningly accurate.

I watched as the words turned to ash and fell onto the desk.

“Slaughtered a surrendered town…” I whispered. “Because of the border clashes, she wiped out civilians who had surrendered?”

“Damn it! That idiot!” Diana roared inside my head. Her fury carried a bitter sense of realization. “Cindy, we finally found it. We finally know why they massacre your family.”

She was right. Everything made sense now.

I set down my glass. The milk had long gone cold. My fingers felt like ice.

The Blood Prince, Franklin, was the ancient monster who had lived for centuries. He was fiercely protective and cruel in revenge.

But bound by the Peace Treaty, he could not openly declare war on the Royal Court.

If Evelyn had broken that treaty for personal glory, killing an already surrendered vampire town and even torturing key figures within it, then Franklin’s revenge was unavoidable.

Back then, the Silverpeak Pack was seen as the Duskfang Pack’s strongest ally because of my bond with James.

To vent his rage and cripple Duskfang, Franklin chose an easier target, the poorly defended Silverpeak

Pack.

“My family…” I said softly. “They became sacrifices for her ambition.”

As the truth settled in, a metallic taste rose in my throat.

At that moment, Jewel pushed the door open and came in with a pot of hot tea. When she saw my pale face and the silver glow barely contained in my eyes, her hand shook. The lid of the teapot clinked loudly.

“Ms. Cindy! What’s wrong? Please don’t scare me!”

I closed my eyes and forced the metallic taste down. My voice came out rough, like sand in my throat. “Take the tea away. Go to the cellar and bring me a bottle of Wolfblood Whiskey.”

Jewel’s eyes widened. “Wolfblood Whiskey? But Ms. Cindy, that’s… that’s only used in extreme grief or when someone is close to losing control. It numbs the nerves.”

“Go,” I said. I didn’t explain.

A short while later, a bottle of deep red liquor was set before me.

I tilted my head back and took a long drink. The whiskey burned like molten rock as it flowed down my throat and exploded in my stomach. The heat barely managed to hold Diana back-but for now, it was enough.

The last time I drank this kind of strong liquor was the day I learned the Silverpeak Pack had been wiped out by vampires. I was staring at the broken bodies of my father and brothers.

The burn went down my throat. Instead of dulling my mind, it sharpened it.
