Chapter 42 Wrath of the Crown
Chapter 42 Wrath of the Crown
Cindy’s POV:
At dawn, I stood outside the towering gates of the Royal Court. Dew still clung to my clothes.
Inside the hall, the air felt heavy and tight.

King Ryken sat high on the Blackrock Throne. His sharp eyes fixed on me as I kneeled before him.
I was not wearing a layered noble gown. Instead, I wore a simple white riding outfit. My hair was tied high.
I had no makeup on, only the pale look of someone who had not slept all night.
“Your Majesty,” I said, my voice rough and urgent, “something has gone terribly wrong.”
King Ryken frowned slightly. As a Class S Alpha, his senses were keen. He caught the scent of my anxiety and a faint trace of alcohol. “Why do you show up like this?” he asked. “If this is about James and Evelyn, you don’t have to do this. The Bond-Breaking Order has already been issued. You are free. There is no reason to cling to the past. Remember who you are now-the Duchess of Silverpeak. Mind your bearing.”
He thought I had come to complain.
I shook my head, straightened my back, and looked him in the eye. “I am not here for personal matters,” I said. “I request this audience because my academy had sent an emergency report. 300,000 vampires have marched through Uclela. They are disguised as hyena mercenaries and are moving fast toward Southreach. Their target is Prince Adam.”
For a moment, King Ryken froze. Then his face darkened, as if he had heard a cruel joke. “Absurd,” he snapped. “Complete nonsense.”
He stood up at once. The pressure of the Wolf King flooded the hall like a crushing weight. My chest tightened, and breathing became hard. “The war with the vampires is over,” he said coldly. “They signed a treaty with us. That treaty was earned by Evelyn’s battle honors. Vampires despise werewolves, but they hate hyenas even more. And you expect me to believe they gathered an army and joined forces with those filthy hyenas? Impossible.”
“Your Majesty,” I said, clenching my teeth, “vampires are deceitful. That treaty is nothing but worthless paper.”
I pulled a letter from my coat and raised it with both hands above my head. “This letter was written by my senior, the scholar Oliver Silva,” I said. “He has traveled across many lands and is now at the Uclela border. What he reports here is what he saw with his own eyes. I beg Your Majesty to read it.”
The letter was fake. I had forged it myself last night, copying Oliver’s handwriting as closely as I could.
Oliver really was traveling, but the military intelligence itself was real.
It came from Fern; her information was always accurate. But in the eyes of the Royal Court, she was a lone wolf with no pack. Worse, she could be considered a rogue who enjoyed stirring chaos. Fern’s words carried little weight. Oliver was different. He was a respected scholar, someone even King Ryken trusted.

If I wanted the king to believe me, I had no choice but to take this risk.
The attendant took the letter and handed it to King Ryken.

I pressed myself flat against the floor. As the paper was unfolded, it made a soft rustling sound. My heart pounded hard. My palms were slick with cold sweat.
“The letter…” King Ryken said slowly. His tone softened. “The handwriting and phrasing do match Oliver’s usual style.”
I finally let out a small breath. Then, King Ryken gave a sharp, cold snort.
“But-”
The temperature in the hall seemed to drop at once.
