Chapter 44 The Night Stalker

Cindy’s POV:

The old estate used to be my playground when I was a child. Now, it felt like a silent prison.

The estate was sealed on all sides. Powerful alchemy wards were set just for werewolves. They suppressed our wolf spirit and made it impossible to break through the walls by force.

Four royal guards stood at the main gate. They were elite fighters, cold-faced, with killing intent written all over them.

I paced back and forth inside the room. With every step, my anxiety grew.

Time was slipping away. Every second that passed made the Southreach defense line more dangerous.

“Stop walking in circles. You’re making me dizzy,” Diana complained in my head. But I could feel it-she was even more restless than I was. In the mind space, she kept sharpening her claws, tearing cracks into the empty void.

“We have to get out,” I said, watching the sky outside slowly darken. “If we wait until tomorrow, Adam might already be ambushed.”

“Fight our way out?” Diana suggested. “Those guards are tough, but if I fully unleash my power, we have a 60% chance.”

“And then what?” I shot back. “We become fugitives, hunted across the whole kingdom? We’d be worn down by our own people before we even reach Southreach.” I shook my head. “No. We have to be smart.”

Just then, heavy footsteps sounded outside. Iron chains clinked against the floor.

“Dinner,” a deep voice said.

The door opened a crack. A tall figure squeezed in, carrying a food box.

He wore the uniform of a Royal Court Administrator, but I recognized the scent right away. It was the calm, steady smell of a Beta-far gentler than the aggressive Alpha presence outside.

Morton.

He had served the Royal Court for years. When my father used to come to the palace, he would sometimes give this average-looking Beta a few tips on sword skills.

Morton set the food box down, but he didn’t leave right away.

With his back to the guards outside, he moved fast. From his sleeve, he slipped out a piece of parchment folded into a small square and pressed it under a plate of roast chicken.

My pupils shrank. I watched him warily.

Morton said nothing. He only lifted his head. In his brown eyes, I saw deep sorrow and respect.

His lips moved slightly. Using a breath so soft only werewolf hearing could catch, he whispered, “Your pack should never have fallen, and the truth should never be buried.”

My heart jumped.

He quickly pulled a small, dark-blue glass vial from inside his coat and pressed it into my hand. His fingers were cold.

“This is an alchemical potion called Nullwater,” he said. “It hides all scent and wolf spirit signals. It lasts for two hours.”

Then he pointed to the parchment on the table. “This is tonight’s guard rotation. The western ward core hasn’t been repaired in years. At midnight, its energy stalls for three seconds.”

I clenched the vial. My palm was damp with sweat.

“Why are you helping me?” I asked. “If they found out, you’d be killed.”

Morton gave a bitter smile. He adjusted the lid of the food box and slipped back into his dull, quiet
