He was the man who once stood in the public square and read out the royal order that helped cut my broken bond.
But now, he was no longer a polished envoy in fine clothes. He was a true battle leader. A head wolf who ruled the field.
He strode to the front line, his eyes locked on me.
The soldiers around him moved to protect him. He waved them back with one sharp motion.
I watched him. Slowly, I pulled my bared fangs back. I bent my front legs slightly and lowered my body. It was a calm, equal gesture. A sign of peace.
I did not change back into human form. After days of nonstop running, my clothes were long torn apart; shifting back now would only leave me exposed.
Prince Adam stopped about ten feet in front of me.
He stared into my eyes-eyes unique to the Silverpeak Pack, glowing with a soft, liquid shine, like mercury in motion.
The guard in his gaze faded. What replaced it was shock. And beneath that, something hard to name. Heartache?
“Silver fur and those eyes,” he said hoarsely, his voice rough like it had been worn down by wind and sand. “Your presence is far stronger now. But that stubborn spirit, I’d recognize it no matter where you are.”
He slowly crouched down until we were at eye level. He did not care about the stunned looks from the soldiers behind him.
“Cindy?” he asked carefully. “Is that you?”
I nodded. A low sound rose from my throat. A clear yes.
“Damn it!” Adam cursed. He stood up fast and pulled off the heavy black cloak from his shoulders.
Stepping forward, he wrapped it around my massive wolf body. His movements were quick but gentle, covering me completely.
“Clear the field!” he roared at the petrified soldiers. “Everyone fall back 300 feet! Disobey, and you lose your head! That is the Grand Duchess. She is my honored guest. Anyone who raises a bow again will lose
his hands!”
At once, his black-armored guards formed a wall, blocking all outside eyes.

Under Adam’s cloak, I was surrounded by his familiar Alpha scent-cedar mixed with iron. For the first time in five days and five nights, I felt safe. The tension drained from my body all at once.
“Don’t be afraid,” Adam said, his voice steady through the thick fabric. “No one will touch you here.” Then his tone softened, edged with concern. “Tell me,” he said, “what happened that made a proud silver wolf run this far, without stopping, just to reach this place?”
I couldn’t speak. All I could do was shout through the mindlink.
“The supply routes are empty. The troops are careless. Your Highness, Evelyn lied to you. The vampires didn’t retreat. They set a trap in Southreach. They’re about to strike back!”
Adam froze. The hand he had raised to calm me stopped in midair.
Cindy’s POV:
Changing back from wolf form to human always hurt. It was the kind of pain that came from bones breaking and snapping back into place, like trying to glue shattered porcelain together.
Behind the screen in the command tent, I bit down on a piece of cork and endured the sharp spasms ripping through my body.
With one final crack, my spine slid back into place.
I sucked in deep breaths, sweat soaked my skin, and my face went pale.
“Put this on.” From outside the screen, a rough hand passed in a brand-new set of black battle armor.
It was Prince Adam.
He stood with his back to me, guarding the screen. His strong Alpha presence blocked all curious eyes.
I quickly put the armor on.
It was clearly made for a male werewolf. It hung a bit loose on me. I tightened the belt and tied my long hair up high. Speed mattered more than looks.
“Thanks,” I said as I stepped out. My voice was still rough.
Adam turned around and looked me over. A hint of approval flashed in his eyes.
“You’re a little thin,” he said, “but this suits you a lot better than those heavy gowns you wore at the banquets.”
He handed me a leather flask filled with Stagblood Wine mixed with alchemy potions. “Drink. Get your strength back. We need to meet some of the old-timers here. Once they know the Silverpeak bloodline has arrived, they’ll probably blow the roof off this tent.”
I took a mouthful. The sharp, bitter taste mixed with iron burned my throat. The warmth chased away some of the cold inside me.
