Chapter 47 An Army Off Guard
Chapter 47 An Army Off Guard
Cindy’s POV:
After crossing into Southreach, I had to slow down.
Not because I was tired, but because everything was too quiet.
This was the only main road leading to the Southreach defense line.

Under normal conditions, whether the front was under pressure or even just on routine duty, this road should have been busy. There should have been supply wagons, carts carrying the wounded, or messengers riding back and forth.
But there was nothing.
The wide road was covered with a thin layer of snow. Only a few old wagon tracks remained, frozen hard.
“This isn’t right,” Diana said, her ears standing straight up. “It’s too quiet. This isn’t what a battlefield looks
like.”
I stopped on a small rise and lowered my body, using dead grass for cover as I looked down.
If the army had lost, there would be deserters and refugees. If there was heavy fighting, there would be constant supply traffic.
This kind of silence meant only one thing. The commander at the front believed victory was already certain. They might even think the war was over, so they had cut back on large-scale supplies and stayed put, waiting for orders to return in triumph.
They think pushing the vampires back means we had won the war, I thought, a chill running through me. “They have no idea it was a trap. They don’t know the main vampire force is moving around the front, ready to swallow them whole under cover of the snowstorm.”
What kind of false report did that fool Evelyn send back?
My worry crushed my exhaustion. I pushed myself harder and raced toward Sandskeep, the forward headquarters of the Southreach Wolfguard.
Sandskeep was a massive fortress, reinforced with earth magic, standing firm in the wind and sand. On its walls flew the Southreach banner; a silver wolf on a black field.
But I smelled danger.
Outside the fortress, the open wasteland was packed with tents.
Yet, patrols were thin. Some guards even huddled together, warming themselves by fires and drinking. This kind of loose defense would crumble like paper in front of a vampire army.
I couldn’t wait any longer.

I leapt out from behind a sand dune. My massive silver body flashed in the sunlight, bright and impossible
to miss.
“Enemy attack! A rogue in the camp!” The lookout spotted me. A sharp horn blast ripped through the air.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
Several arrows screamed toward me.
I did not slow down. With the sharp reflexes Diana gave me, I twisted my body in midair and avoided the worst of it. An arrow skimmed past my back leg and cut a thin line of blood across my fur. I felt no pain.
I charged straight toward the camp gate; dozens of wolfguard stood there, holding long spears.
They were werewolves too. Now they were half-shifted, fangs bared, claws out, ready to fight.
I couldn’t attack them. They were allies.
I slammed to a stop about thirty feet away. The force carved two deep grooves into the sandy ground.
I lifted my head and steadied my breath.
I was still in wolf form. I couldn’t speak human words. As a high-rank werewolf, I could use Mindshock to send my will directly into their minds.
“I am Grand Duchess, Cindy Spencer!”
The voice did not travel through air. It struck through wolf spirit resonance and exploded inside every Wolfguard’s head.
They froze. Hands gripping weapons began to shake.
Silverpeak Pack. The legendary family that guarded Northmere for a hundred years. A name every warrior knew.
“I need to see the commander!” I let out another long howl, this one heavy with alpha pressure and urgency, “I bring urgent news!”
“How dare you!” a deputy general shouted as he snapped out of it, face red with anger. “What rogue are you? How dare you pretend to be an Alpha? The Alpha of Silverpeak Pack is male! Loose the arrows! Kill it!”
He clearly did not believe a Silverpeak Alpha could be female.
