Chapter 58 The Silver Reaper

Chapter 58 The Silver Reaper

Cindy’s POV:

Winter night pressed down hard on Southreach. The wind cut like a barbed whip.

Wooo-wooo-

A sharp horn blast exploded from the walls of Sandskeep and tore the silence apart.

“Enemy attack! Due north!”

I snapped awake. Inside my mind, Diana shifted instantly into battle mode.

I grabbed the Soulrip Gauntlets from beside my pillow and rushed out of the tent.

The entire camp was already in chaos.

On the far horizon, a massive dark shape was moving.

By the firelight on the walls, I finally saw what it was-countless pairs of glowing red eyes. They were Blood Thralls.

These things were failed creations of vampires. They had no minds, felt no pain, and existed only to charge and die. Perfect cannon fodder.

Behind them floated pale figures in elegant black coats. High-ranking vampires hovered calmly in the air, as if watching a show about to begin.

“Spearhead Squad! Gather!” I shouted.

Viola, Forrest, Tyrone, and Sterling appeared behind me at once.

None of them looked sleepy. Their eyes burned with excitement.

“So it finally starts?” Forrest grinned, licking his lips. He slammed his twin battle axes together, metal ringing loud. “My axes have been waiting for this.”

“Don’t underestimate the enemy,” I said firmly. “This is the front line of a 300,000-strong army. Our mission is to breach their line and take out their commanders.”

“Charge!”

With Adam’s command, the Southreach wolfguard surged out of the fortress like a black tide.

This was my first real battle. A true meat grinder.

The moment we met the enemy, blood and flesh filled the air.

Claws smashed into fangs. Limbs flew.

At first, I was overwhelmed.

This was nothing like academy drills.

Enemies came from every direction. One mistake meant a bolt in the back.

“Cindy! Left!” Viola’s whip snapped out like a living snake. It wrapped around a vampire knight trying to ambush me. She yanked hard and slammed him into the ground. The impact crushed him into a ruined heap.

“Thanks!”

I took a deep breath and forced myself to focus.

Diana took full control of my senses. The world slowed.

I could see every Blood Thrall’s movement. I could smell the sharp, sweet stench of a high-ranking vampire.

“There!”

I locked onto a vampire viscount riding a skeletal horse, shouting orders to the charging horde.

“Cover me!” I yelled.

I leapt forward, transforming midair into a half-beast form.

Silver wolf ears and a tail burst into view. My speed exploded.

Tyrone swung his iron staff in a wide arc, clearing a path straight to me. Sterling vanished into the shadows. A heartbeat later, he reappeared at the viscount’s side, his dagger slicing through the enemy’s shield.

“Die!”

The Soulrip Gauntlets on my hands flared with silver light. Using the force of my dive, I struck straight through the viscount’s heart.

Boom!

My power erupted.

The vampire viscount didn’t even have time to scream. His body shattered and turned into a cloud of ash.

With their commander dead, the undead in this area instantly lost control. The corpse swarm broke apart and began to wander without purpose.

“Well done!” Forrest roared as he charged in, splitting a ghoul in half with one swing of his axe as it tried to fill the gap.

That night, we fought restlessly.

The Soulrip Gauntlets felt alive in my hands. Every strike sent another undead into final rest.

My armor was soaked dark red with blood. It dried in the wind, then got soaked wet again.

I had lost count of how many enemies I killed.

I only remember that when Diana let out a low, exhausted growl inside me, the sky finally began to glow pale with dawn.

The vampire army retreated like a falling tide, leaving behind piles of bodies and fields of ash.

I removed my gauntlets and dropped to one knee atop the mound of corpses, gasping for air.

My arms were so numb I could barely feel them, while countless small wounds slowly closed on their own.

“We … won?” Viola staggered over, covered in blood. Her auburn hair had turned dark and sticky.

I looked at the rising sun. Its light spread across the ruined battlefield and across us, a group of young werewolves still standing.

“A narrow win,” I said, my voice rough but steady, filled with something new. “But this was only the first battle.”
