Inside the main command tent, a massive map table filled the center of the room. Red and blue flags stood packed across it like a frozen battlefield.

“We have bad news,” Prince Adam said, pointing at the model of Sandskeep on the table. “The reinforcements may not make it in time. We only have enough food left for three days. Sandskeep was our current base. The main hyena force was camped at Wailing Keep, about 19 miles away. That place used to be our forward outpost. It fell the moment the vampire-hyena alliance arrived.

“The hyenas didn’t fully trust the vampires. They kept most of the vampire army farther back at Bloodmoor Castle. Only a small vampire unit stayed at Wailing Keep as overseers.”

Adam looked around the tent. “Any ideas?”

The older generals spoke one after another. Some suggested a temporary retreat. Others said we might have to slaughter our warhorses for food.

“We can take the hyenas’ supplies,” I said suddenly, eyes fixed on the map table. “Wailing Keep is their main base. We already know where their supply depot is.”

Vampires could feed on blood from other creatures. Hyenas couldn’t. Like us werewolves, they needed real meat to survive.

I traced a line across the map table and stopped at Wailing Keep.

“We fake weakness first,” I said. “Make the hyenas think we’re running out of strength. Once they relax, we launch a full attack. We take Wailing Keep and tie down their main force.”

Then my finger slid past Wailing Keep, toward a narrow, almost hidden canyon behind it.

“I’ll take an elite unit,” I continued, “and strike their supply depot directly.”

The tent went quiet.

Prince Adam stared at me; a sharp light flashed in his eyes.

Then, without warning, he reached out and pinched my cheek hard.

“Hey!” I hissed in pain and stepped back, covering my face. “Your Highness, what was that for?”

“To see if you’re real,” Adam laughed. “You clever little pup. That plan was precisely what I had in mind, All that nasty idea-you should’ve been a strategist.”

He did it so naturally, like he was teasing a junior or a brother-in-arms from the same trench.

The generals around us chuckled in good humor.

“As expected of a Luna of Duskfang Pack,” an old general with a gray beard said warmly. “What a devoted

pair! The Alpha is on the way here and the Luna plans the war here. Once he arrives and the two of you join forces, Franklin will wet his pants.”

“Exactly! What a perfect pair!”

“I heard James even crossed Deadmarsh to rush here,” someone added. “That kind of loyalty-rare, truly

rare.”

The tent filled with lively chatter. Everyone assumed James and I were still that admired, perfectly bonded pair. Even though I came under the title of Grand Duchess, they saw it as a formality for the campaign.

After all, the Bond-Breaking Order happened inside Duskfang Pack. The news was sealed. Southreach was too far away and too slow to hear the truth.

My smile froze. That sick feeling rose in my stomach again.
