When everything finally went quiet, I sat alone on a huge rock at the edge of the camp and stared at the pale moon hanging low in the sky.
As the adrenaline faded from my body, all that was left was deep exhaustion and loneliness.
The words the generals had said during the day kept stabbing at my heart, over and over again.
A devoted pair, bound by deep love …
How ironic.
They didn’t know that the werewolf rushing toward us had betrayed me for another woman.
They didn’t know how decisively I had cut that bond myself.
What scared me even more was this: when James and Evelyn really arrived, when the truth finally came out, how would everyone look at me?
“She’s just a jealous woman who got cast aside.” “She came to Southreach to show off in front of the Duskfang Pack’s alpha.” “How sad. She’s risking her life just to win a man back.”
Those whispers felt like they were already ringing in my ears.
“What are you thinking about?”
A cloak, still warm, settled over my shoulders.
Viola sat down beside me, holding half a flatbread that was burned on one side.
Forrest, Tyrone, and Sterling came over too. They didn’t say anything. They just sat quietly on the grass near my feet.
“I was thinking…” I hugged my knees, my voice shaking a little. “Do you think everyone believes I came here because of James? Do I look ridiculous?”
“Ridiculous, my foot!” Viola snapped, taking a hard bite of the bread. “Who would dare laugh at you? Every bit of your rank was earned with your merit. That’s the only truth that matters. When James gets here and sees Battalion Commander standing tall, he’s the one who should feel foolish.”
“Exactly,” Tyrone said, looking up at me. “Cindy, don’t listen to rumors. In this world, strength is what counts. You’re stronger than Evelyn and James. That’s enough.”
“But…” I buried my face in my knees, and the tears finally broke free. “But I don’t have a home anymore.”
The moment those words left my mouth, every wall I had built collapsed.

“Viola, I don’t have a home anymore. My father is dead. My mother is dead. Ray is dead too. Before this, even though James didn’t love me, I still had a place to go back to. Now, even though I want to write a letter to tell them I’m safe, I don’t know who to send it to.
“I fought like my life depended on it. I killed and killed, trying to prove myself. But when it was over, I turned around, and there was nothing. No one waiting for me to go home.”
