The hour before dawn was the darkest of all. Wailing Keep lay on the wasteland like a sleeping beast. It looked huge and still, as if nothing could wake it.
Only a few torches burned on the walls. Most of the guards were hiding from the cold wind, half asleep. From inside the fortress, we could even hear drunken snoring.
They truly believed we were scared and busy taking care of the wounded soldiers.
“Action,” I whispered the word.
Five shadows rose at once and pressed against the rough stone wall, silent as spiders.
This was not normal climbing.
In our half-shifted state, our fingers had turned into sharp wolf claws. They dug easily into cracks in the stone, holding firm.
Prince Adam and I went first.
Yes. The Grand Marshal himself chose to join this strike team.
He said only his golden wolf spirit could draw enough enemy fire at once. That was the only way to open the gates and buy time for the main army.
The wind roared past my ear. The wall was nearly 160 feet high. We reached the top in less than a minute.
“Who’s there?!”
A hyena guard, half-awake and stepping aside to relieve himself, spotted a dark shape at the edge of the wall.
He never got the chance to shout. Tyrone’s staff shot forward and struck his throat.
Crack! The sound of breaking bone vanished into the wind. The body collapsed without a sound.
The six of us pulled ourselves onto the wall.
On the tower platform stood 12 massive ballistae, all aimed at the ground below. They were the fortress’s deadliest weapons.
“Split up. Destroy them,” Adam ordered.
We scattered at once.
Viola snapped her long whip around the trigger of a ballista and yanked hard. The winch shattered. Forrest brought his massive axe down in one strike and chopped the bowstring clean in half. Sterling moved through the shadows like a ghost, cutting down the crews before they could shout.

Chapter 66 The Golden Wolf King
Adam and I ran straight for the gate winch.
Then a sharp scream tore through the night.
“Enemy attack! Werewolves on the wall!”
A vampire scout spotted us and raised the alarm.
The fortress exploded into chaos.

Torches flared to life. Half-awake hyenas and vampires poured out of their barracks. Arrows and magic blasts rained down on the wall.
“Open the gate!” I shouted. I smashed two guards aside with my claws and yelled to Forrest, who was cranking the huge winch behind me.
“It’s too heavy!” he snarled. “And it’s rusted solid!” Veins bulged on his neck as he pushed his strength to the limit. His Direbear Wolf bloodline surged. The winch groaned and began to turn, inch by inch, with a painful screech.
More enemies arrived. A vampire count charged up the ramp with a squad of elite knights, heading straight for us.
“You open the gate! I’ll hold them!” Prince Adam roared.
He threw his head back and let out a thunderous howl.
Golden light burst from his body and flooded the wall.
In that blinding glow, a massive wolf took shape. His fur shone like pure gold.
It was the mark of royal blood. The highest battle form of the werewolves. The Golden Wolf King.
“ROAR!”
The Golden Wolf King leapt forward and slammed into the enemy line.
He was a living war machine. One sweep of his claws sent armored vampire knights flying, horses and all. His golden light burned against the darkness. Lesser Blood Thralls wouldn’t even dare come close.
Every enemy focused on him. Attack after attack crashed into his body. His battle aura held, but I still saw blood stain his golden fur.
