Chapter 65 The Horn of the Counterattack

Cindy’s POV:

“Fall back! Pull back now! Those hyenas are tougher than they look!”

I shouted at the top of my lungs, making sure I looked panicked and beaten. I led my strong unit in a messy retreat from the walls of Wailing Keep. Behind us, the hyenas on the wall burst into sharp laughter and wild howls.

“Run, you weakling!” “That’s your elite force? You can’t even scratch the wall!” “Go home and drink milk! Hahaha!”

This was the second time.

For two days in a row, Prince Adam had ordered us to launch these soft, half-hearted attacks.

We would rush to the edge of enemy range, throw a few spears, get pushed back by their fire, then turn and flee right away. Every single time.

Back at camp, Forrest slammed his huge axe into the sand. “This is humiliating!” he growled. “I’ve never fought like this before. Those pups are up there mocking us, and I have to pretend I’m scared stiff!”

“This is how you make the enemy careless,” Tyrone said. A blade of grass hung from his mouth. His voice was calm, but his iron staff was clenched so tight that finger marks showed on the metal. “The louder they laugh, the sloppier they get. Didn’t you notice? During the second fake attack today, they had one-third fewer archers than before. They’re rotating shifts. They’re drinking. They think they’ve already won.”

I sat by the campfire, quietly cleaning my gauntlets.

Inside my mind, Diana paced back and forth. She was a proud silver wolf, and this kind of retreat went against her instincts. Still, we both knew this was the price of victory.

“Enough complaining,” I said firmly. “Save your strength. Tonight, if anyone drops before they’ve killed their share, don’t say you came from my unit.”

Late at night, inside the command tent.

Prince Adam stood before the massive map table. His eyes were no longer dull like they had been during the daytime feints. Now they were sharp, like blades.

“The show is over,” he said. His finger struck the model of Wailing Keep hard. “And the audience have taken their seats. That idiot Victor is probably hosting a victory feast right now. According to Shadewing’s intel, they think we won’t attack for real until James’s reinforcements arrive. That makes tonight their weakest point.”

He lifted his head and looked around at all the commanders. A faint golden aura that belonged to the Wolf King rose from him, steady and powerful.

“Tonight, before dawn, we launch the full assault,” Adam said. “No reserves. Every unit goes in.”

The generals’ eyes lit up. They answered in one voice, low and fierce. “Yes!”

“Cindy.” Adam suddenly called my name.

“Here,” I said, stepping forward.

His finger moved on the map, from the castle to a lone camp about five miles behind it.

“This is the hyena alliance’s supply depot,” Adam said. His voice turned hard. “They’ve stockpiled meat here, along with supplies the Uclela forces looted from Southreach. This place is their lifeline. It’s ours. Even if we take the castle, without food we won’t last three days.”

He looked at me with blazing gazes. “I’m giving you 3,000 soldiers. When the main attack begins, you’ll circle around and strike the depot from behind. Remember, this must be a surprise. Once you take it, hold the position and wait for backup.”

3,000 soldiers sneak behind enemy lines.

This wasn’t just a raid. It was a mission where few were expected to come back.

I didn’t hesitate.
