Chapter 73 A Woman Cast Aside

Cindy’s POV:

The council hall felt tense and strange.

Adam sat at the head of the room, slowly turning a fine wine glass in his hand.

He had gotten himself changed into clean, simple clothes. He looked calm, strong, and quietly commanding.

James and Evelyn stood in the center of the hall. They had wiped off the worst of the mud, but next to the polished armor and neat uniforms around them, they still looked really out of place.

“Your Highness, Generals Nolan and Russell report for duty,” they said as they dropped to one knee.

Adam did not tell them to rise. He took a slow sip of wine and left them kneeling for a long while. Only then did he speak, his tone casual. “You’ve had a hard journey,” he said. “That shortcut of yours is truly creative.”

A few officers around the hall let out quiet, suppressed chuckles.

James lowered his head even more, his face burning hot with shame.

Evelyn clenched her lips. A flash of resentment crossed her eyes. “Your Highness,” she said sharply, “the marsh was dangerous. The terrain was complex, and there were high-level dread beasts everywhere. We may be late, but our loyalty to the Crown is real. We are ready to fight at once. We can even lead the charge.”

“Fight?” Adam laughed softly. “General Russell, take a look outside. Does Sandskeep still need to be saved? The enemies have already been crushed. Victor has been captured. Franklin is trapped in Bloodmoor Castle. The siege of Southreach is mostly over.”

James and Evelyn snapped their heads up, stunned.

“What?” Evelyn cried out. “It’s over? That’s impossible! We were only late by a couple of weeks. How could it end so fast?”

At that moment, a tall, broad-shouldered old alpha stepped forward.

His face was covered in a thick beard, and his presence quickly filled the room. He was known as Spike. He had once been my father’s most trusted right-hand man and an elder I had known since childhood.

Spike walked up to James and looked him up and down/Then he suddenly burst out laughing and slapped James hard on the shoulder. The force was so strong it nearly knocked the weakened James off his feet.

“Good lad!” Spike boomed, his voice shaking the entire hall. “You may have arrived late, but your taste is solid! I was worried you weren’t worthy of a girl from the Silverpeak Pack. Turns out you’ve bonded with a Luna this strong!” He laughed loudly. “If it weren’t for your Luna, Sandskeep would have fallen!”

Spike had no idea that James and I had already broken our bond. He knew nothing about what had

In his mind, I was still James’ mate. I had simply followed my husband to war and earned great glory.

“That’s right!” another commander chimed in. “Alpha, your Luna is a true hero!”

“That raid on the supply depot. She led 3,000 soldiers against 20,000 enemies! A textbook-perfect battle!”

The other commanders nodded and joined in, clearly unaware of the truth.

James stood there, completely confused. “My Luna?” he asked slowly. “You mean…?”
