The rain poured down like filth from a ripped-open sky-cold, thick, and tasting of rust that wouldn’t wash away.
I was shoved to my knees. Sharp rocks pushed through the cracks in my armor and stabbed into my skin, sending a dull ache through my knees. But that pain meant nothing next to the fear hanging in the air.
Deathly silence settled around us. The only sound left was rain pounding against metal.
My hands were tied behind me with coarse alchemical rope. Dark magic ran through it, steadily eating away at the last of my wolf spirit. I was left shaking in the mud, weak as a stray without teeth.
Nineteen loyal soldiers remained around me. They had fought at my side and committed those “great deeds” with me in Evernight Gorge. Now they huddled in the shadows like scraps of meat thrown aside.
Their eyes were empty, filled with terror of the unknown.
Standing in front of us was a vampire in dark red armor. His skin was pale, and he casually played with a silver dagger.
The blade spun between his long fingers, flashing silver light through the rainy darkness, like death calmly choosing where to strike.
He was Ivan, the third brother of the boy I had killed.
“Do you know something, General Rusell?”
His voice was gentle, almost soft. But it crashed in my ears like thunder. He didn’t yell or lose control. That calm, restrained elegance was far more terrifying than any roar.
“In werewolf stories, the moon is a holy mother. To vampires, it’s a giant eye. It sees every sin and remembers them all.”
He squatted, bringing his unnaturally handsome face close to mine. In his ruby-red eyes, I saw my reflection clearly-messy hair, mud-smeared face, eyes wide with terror, like an animal waiting to die.
“That ‘soldier’ you killed in Evernight Gorge-the boy whose tongue you cut out, whose eyes you gouged, whom you humiliated to death like a toy…”
He smiled cruelly. The dagger pressed against my cheek, cold enough to make my skin crawl. “He had just turned 16. He was the vampires’ seventh prince, and my father’s most beloved youngest son-Eric.”
Boom!
Something exploded inside my head, shattering what little sense I had left.
A prince?

I had thought he was just some low-ranking noble. I told myself the torture and humiliation were a strategy-a way to crush enemy morale and vent my anger.
I’d even felt proud, like I’d crushed the enemy’s treasure.
But now, that “jewel” had become a sword hanging over my head.
