Chapter 93 Evelyn’s Betrayal

Chapter 93 Evelyn’s Betrayal

Evelyn’s POV:

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

I led my troops deeper into the alley.

The “nobles” we were chasing suddenly stopped at the very end of the alley.

It was a dead end.

“Hahaha! Run some more! Why stop now?” I panted, laughing with triumph. “Drop your valuables! Then I might leave your bodies in one piece!”

They slowly turned around.

Then, they pulled down their hoods and stripped off the fancy robes!

There was no silk underneath, only thick black armor.

What they held weren’t scepters but sabers stained dark with blood.

“This…” Timothy’s voice trembled. “General, those look like the vampires’ Blackwing Suicide Fighters…”

Before I could respond, dozens of figures appeared on the rooftops along the alley.

It was a dense swarm of crossbowmen.

“We’ve been tricked!” I yelled. “Pull back! Retreat!”

“Retreat? Where to?”

A calm, chilling voice drifted from ahead.

The suicide fighters split apart, revealing a young man with pale skin and cold, sharp eyes.

He wore dark red armor and casually flipped a delicate dagger between his fingers.

“General Rusell, it’s been a while,” he said, staring at me like a butcher sizing up meat. “Remember Evernight Gorge? That boy whose tongue you cut out? The one whose eyes you carved away?”

A chill ran through me, straight to my skull.

“Who … who are you?” I stammered.

“I’m his brother, Ivan.” He bared a set of sharp, white fangs. “I’ve waited a long time for today.

“Kill them all! Leave none alive! Just keep that woman alive!”

Whish-whish-whish!

A rain of arrows fell.

In this narrow, dead-end alley, there was nowhere to dodge.

“Ah!”

My loyal followers dropped one after another.

Three hundred of us were cut down to fewer than 50 in an instant.

“Push through! Fight until the end!” I swung my sword, but it suddenly felt impossibly heavy.

A suicide fighter rushed me, blade aimed at my shoulder.

Instinctively, I yanked a guard beside me into the blow.

Shhhk!

The blade sliced into his neck. His eyes went wide in shock, as if he couldn’t believe I would use him as a shield.

“Don’t blame me … I want to live … I have to live!” I shrieked, throwing his body away as I staggered back.

“General! There’s an opening!”

Timothy found a dog-sized hole at the base of the wall and was frantically digging at the bricks. “Hurry! We can crawl through!”

I felt a surge of hope and ran toward it.

But the hole was tiny. Only one person could fit.

Behind us, Ivan and his men were closing fast.

“I’m going first!” I shoved Timothy aside.

“Evelyn! I’m your cousin!” He froze. “Let me get halfway in. I can hold them back—”

“Hold what back? You want me dead too?!”

They were almost on us. Fear swallowed everything.

I kicked Timothy hard in the knees, knocked him down, and shoved him straight at the charging vampires.

“Timothy, stop them! I’ll take care of your family!”
