A sharp crack cut through the air. The whip burned across my cheek, and with it, the last of my pride shattered.
Ivan didn’t use a dagger. He struck me with his bare hand instead. The backhand sent two bloody teeth flying from my mouth.
My face puffed up right away. My ears buzzed, and sparks exploded across my
vision.
He grabbed my rain-soaked hair and yanked my head up, forcing me to face him. His expression twisted with raw fury.
“You disgusting, worthless bitch! You still dare to bring up Cindy?!”
He bellowed, his voice bouncing off the narrow alley and making my head spin. “Do you even know why this war began? Do you know why we crossed Blooddune at all costs to come here?
“It was because of what you did in Evernight Gorge! To avenge my brother and hunt down the bastard who killed him, my father ordered the Silverpeak Pack wiped out!”
Boom-
This time, it wasn’t thunder. It felt as though reality itself was shattering before me.
I went completely still, forgetting how to breathe.
Silverpeak Pack was destroyed because of me?
“For this war, we lost a grand duke, used forbidden blood sacrifices, and paid an enormous price!” Ivan’s voice cracked, soaked in grief and hatred. “We believed the Silverpeak Pack was guilty. We believed Benjamin’s last bloodline were the killers! It wasn’t until later that we uncovered the truth. It was you! You damned woman!
“We slaughtered the wrong people! We poured our hatred onto an innocent, honorable family! That shame will never leave the vampire royal house. It’s a sin we’ll carry forever, and it all started with you!”
Cold spread through my body, like my veins had frozen solid.
So Cindy’s family was destroyed, her entire clan erased, all because of me?
The once-proud Silverpeak Pack, feared and respected across Northmere, had been wiped out because they took the blame for my crimes.
Cindy’s eyes flashed through my mind, full of hatred and despair, back at Moonwhisper Residence. I remembered her decisive bond-breaking at the Duskfang Pack. I remembered the way James’s gaze toward me had grown more and more complicated.

“No wonder…” I murmured. “No wonder she hates me so much…”

“To save yourself, you wanted us to hunt down the victim who carried your blood debt? You wanted us to kill the one who defeated us fair and square on the battlefield?” Ivan released me, letting my body collapse to the ground like trash.
“On the battlefield, Cindy is our enemy, but she earned our respect. And you? You only stab backs, slaughter prisoners, and betray your own people. Filth like you poisons the air just by breathing. Even your death would stain the ground.”
He wiped his hand in disgust, as if he’d touched something foul.
“Take her.”
He flicked his hand, his voice turning icy again. “To the hunter’s cabin on the mountain. Tonight, I’ll ‘entertain’ this general. I’ll teach her what hell really feels like.”
