A collective gasp went through the room.
There was a world of difference between unwittingly causing the firm to make a bad investment and knowingly concealing problems to conspire with an outside party to defraud the company. The first was negligence. The second was a felony.
The moment Sunny finished speaking, Felice's legs gave out, and she collapsed into her chair.
"Felice, what is this about a court judgment!"
Felice's face was ashen. "I... I didn't... Mr. Blake, you have to believe me, I never intended to defraud the firm! I swear! I only just found out about this judgment today..."
Mr. Blake's jaw clenched; he didn't buy a word of it. "You're the one who brought in the contract for Vista Heights Lodge! You were the point person from start to finish! And you're telling me you didn't know? Do you take me for a fool?!"
Felice's eyes widened in fear. "Mr. Blake, I..."
Mr. Blake had no patience for her excuses. He turned to his assistant. "Call the police. I won't let this slide."
The assistant nodded and immediately left the room to make the call.
The police! The word hit Felice like a hammer blow. She stumbled forward and grabbed the assistant's arm. "No, you can't call the police! You can't!"
Just as Mr. Blake had said, she was the one who signed the contract for Vista Heights Lodge. Her name was on the signature line. If the police were called, her career in design would be over, regardless of the investigation's outcome.
"What are you waiting for?" Mr. Blake urged his assistant impatiently.
The assistant immediately pried Felice's hands off him.
Seeing she couldn't stop him, Felice's eyes landed on the silent Genevieve. As if a switch flipped in her mind, she lunged. "It was you! Genevieve! You set me up!"
Startled, Genevieve dodged backward. "Ms. Donald, what are you talking about?" she asked, her voice full of innocence. "What do you mean, I set you up?"
"Enough!" Mr. Blake roared, shoving Felice away. She stumbled back, crashing into a chair.
"Mr. Blake, it was Genevieve!" Felice steadied herself, her face flushed with desperation as she pointed a shaking finger at Genevieve, who was cowering behind Mr. Blake. "She's the one who gave me the contract for Vista Heights Lodge! She knew it was a bogus project and used it to set me up!"
Mr. Blake frowned, looking at Genevieve with suspicion.
Genevieve shook her head frantically. "Mr. Blake, I didn't. I admit that Vista Heights Lodge contacted me previously, but I turned them down, feeling I was too new at Aurelian Central to take on such a project. Ms. Donald's claim that I gave her the contract is completely baseless."
Sunny looked down at the drive in confusion.
Victoria gave her a meaningful look, then tilted her chin toward the projection screen.
Sunny blinked, then her eyes lit up with understanding. Before anyone else could react, she slipped over to the computer connected to the projector and plugged in the drive.
There were only two video files on the drive. Sunny raised an eyebrow, clicked on the first one, and hit play.
"Don't blame me, Victoria. If you have to blame someone, blame yourself for stealing my project! You're just a plagiarist! What gives you the right to compete with me? What right!"
Rose's voice suddenly filled the conference room. All heads turned to the large projection screen.
The video showed Rose, her back to the camera, feeding pages one by one into a paper shredder.
The camera suddenly zoomed in, revealing that the papers were design drafts. The words "Midlake Estates" were clearly visible in the top right corner.
The screen flickered, then switched to the next video...
