The Abandoned Wife Dumped Him First (Victoria and Elias) novel Chapter 239

Maria was startled by the woman's urgent gaze.

"It's quite a coincidence, actually. A few days before I found you, Dr. Evans was up in the mountains gathering herbs when he came across an unconscious man. He said the man's injuries were much worse than yours; he was barely breathing."

"Dr. Evans quickly carried him back, but the man showed no signs of improvement. The villagers discussed it and sent him to the clinic in town. But the clinic didn't dare to admit him, so he was transferred to the town hospital."

"The hospital took him, but they said he has a blood clot in his brain pressing on some nerve. They're afraid he won't wake up, that he'll be in a vegetative state."

Finishing her story, Maria sighed with pity.

The woman's face paled, and her heart sank. "What... what does he look like?"

Maria shook her head. "I never saw him. I just heard Dr. Evans say he's quite handsome. He even joked that if he could save him, he might just get himself a son-in-law."

As she said this, it dawned on Maria, and she asked, "Dear, do you know him?"

The woman pressed her lips together so tightly they turned white. After a long moment, she lowered her gaze. "I'm not sure."

"It's alright, it's alright. Didn't Dr. Evans say? You just woke up and haven't fully recovered. You'll probably remember everything in a few days."

Maria offered comfort, then stood up. "I'll go prepare your medicine. You should finish your soup."

With a creak, the old wooden door opened and closed. Maria left the room.

The woman sat there, and her gaze drifted to a neatly folded pile of clothes nearby, with a cell phone resting on top. She placed her hands on the bed to push herself up.

But she had been lying down for too long. The moment she stood, her legs gave out, and she collapsed back onto the bed. At the same time, more fragments of memory flashed through her mind.

'Abbey, if you're willing, I can marry you and take responsibility for you.'

'Abbey, why are you avoiding me?'

'Abbey, I think... I'm starting to care about you.'

The man's deep, steady voice echoed in her ears.

The woman's face turned deathly pale. She clutched at her chest and fell from the bed to the floor.

With a clatter, the soup bowl smashed, its scalding contents splashing onto her arm.

Yet, she seemed oblivious to the pain, feeling only a heartache so intense she could barely breathe. Her voice was hoarse with agony.

Maria, who was supporting Abbey, said gratefully, "Leilani, thank you so much for your trouble."

"Maria, what are you talking about? It's no trouble at all," said Leilani, who was Dr. Evans's daughter. She paused, then added, "I just didn't expect Miss Prescott to know the gentleman. But it's a good thing. If it had been a few days later, the hospital was probably going to call the police to see if we could contact his family."

She recalled her initial awe and delight upon seeing the man in the hospital room. Glancing at Abbey, her expression dimmed slightly.

Abbey was much prettier than she was.

Hearing this, Maria suddenly remembered Dr. Evans's earlier joke about finding a son-in-law and gave a few dry laughs. "Yes, I didn't expect such a coincidence either."

Leilani pressed her lips together. "Maria, Miss Prescott, I'll be going now."

Maria nodded repeatedly. After watching Leilani leave, she turned to see Abbey standing there, lost and dazed. She found an excuse. "Abbey, Leilani has been taking care of him for so long. I'm going to go downstairs and buy some fruit to give her as a thank you."

"Maria, thank you."

"Oh, it's nothing. You go on in and see him," Maria said, patting Abbey's shoulder before turning to leave.

Abbey stood outside the door, her hand on the handle. After a long moment, she finally pressed down and pushed the door open.
