The Abandoned Wife Dumped Him First (Victoria and Elias) novel Chapter 240

On the hospital bed, the man's eyes were tightly shut. If not for the oxygen tube under his nose, he looked so peaceful he could have just been asleep.

It had only been a month, but his once-handsome features had grown much thinner.

Abbey's eyes welled up, and tears spilled over.

She walked to the bedside, cautiously reaching out a hand, wanting to touch the man's pale face.

However, her fingertips froze just inches from his skin.

She didn't dare to touch him, afraid this was all just a dream.

"Grady... Grady..."

"I'm sorry..."

Abbey suppressed her choked sobs. After a long while, unable to hold back the torrent of emotions any longer, she collapsed over the side of the bed, weeping uncontrollably.

-

Night fell.

Leilani got off work and picked up dinner from the hospital cafeteria before pushing open the door to the room.

She saw Abbey sitting on the wooden stool by the bed, her hand tightly clutching Grady's, not saying a word.

"Miss Prescott." Leilani stood by the door for a moment before walking over and setting down a warm food container. "I got some food from the cafeteria. You should eat something."

Abbey looked up at the sound of her voice, saw Leilani, and paused, her eyes instinctively glancing toward the door.

"Maria said my dad prescribed some more medicine for you. She went back home to prepare it and will bring it over tomorrow morning," Leilani explained, seeing her confusion.

Abbey had been crying all afternoon, and the corners of her eyes were still red.

"Thank you," she managed, forcing a smile.

Leilani put her hands in her uniform pockets and glanced at the man on the bed. "So his name is Grady. That's a nice name."

Abbey flinched slightly, her gaze falling.

Leilani sensed her low spirits. She opened her mouth to offer some comfort, but then she remembered the severity of Grady's condition and swallowed her words. Instead, she took the phone out of her pocket and handed it to her.

"Miss Prescott, here."

Her mother's voice immediately choked up. "Abbey, it really is you. How are you? It's so cold, are you..."

"Mom, I'm fine," Abbey said, her lips barely moving.

"Good, as long as you're okay, your father and I can rest easy." Abbey's mother quickly composed herself, trying to make her tone as light as possible.

After a few seconds of mutual silence, Abbey asked hoarsely, "Are you, Dad, and my sister all okay?"

"Abbey..." her mother began, then stopped.

Abbey's intuition immediately told her something was wrong. "Mom, what happened at home?"

Abbey's mother covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face. Hearing her mother's sobs, Abbey grew increasingly anxious. "Is it Dad's health? Or has my sister's condition gotten worse?"

"Your father is fine. It's your sister." Her mother suppressed her grief, closing her eyes. A moment later, she spoke with grave finality.

"Abbey, your sister... she passed away two weeks ago."

It was as if a bolt of lightning had struck her. The color drained from Abbey's face. It took a long time for her to find her voice.

"Mom, you're joking, right?"
