Sunny was clearly taken aback for a second. "I... I guessed."
Victoria just stared at her, saying nothing.
Under Victoria's scrutinizing gaze, Sunny felt a wave of pressure. An unnatural expression flickered across her face as she turned to scoop up Dawn from the floor and make a quick exit.
"Meow~"
Unfortunately, Dawn was not in a cooperative mood. The cat immediately jumped out of her arms and started rubbing against Victoria's ankles.
Sunny took a deep breath, her face crumpling. "Victoria..."
"Don't try to be cute," Victoria said, seeing right through her. "If you can't give me a believable explanation today, you can leave right now."
Sunny's face fell. She looked down and mumbled, "It was Mr. Shawn."
She said it so quickly and quietly that Victoria didn't catch it. "What did you say?"
Sunny looked up at Victoria, then screwed her eyes shut and blurted it out. "After Rose's video came out, I got a call from Mr. Shawn. He told me to come find you immediately and stay with you. He said he'd handle my leave with the Design Institute and even transferred a hundred thousand dollars to my account."
"So it was Elias."
"No wonder his car rushed over just as the van was about to hit me yesterday..."
Victoria felt her heart sink.
Having gotten it all out, Sunny was slightly out of breath. Seeing Victoria's cold expression, her own heart sank. She grabbed Victoria's hand urgently. "But I swear, I didn't come because of the money, Victoria. I was genuinely worried about you. It's just that Mr. Shawn called me..."
Victoria pulled her hand back, her gaze lowering. "I know."
Sunny stared at her empty palm, feeling like she was about to cry. "Victoria, can you please not be mad? I... I know I was wrong, I..."
Seeing tears welling up in her friend's eyes, Victoria sighed and handed her a tissue. "I haven't said anything yet, and you're already about to cry. Anyone who didn't know better would think you were the one who got tricked, not me."
At that, Sunny's tears started streaming down her face.
"Victoria, I'm really sorry. Please don't stop being my friend."
"When did I ever say I wouldn't be your friend anymore?" Victoria said, frustrated. "Didn't I just tell you I'm not angry?"
But Victoria didn't realize that her reassurances sounded to Sunny like she was drawing a line between them, preparing to end their friendship.
Sunny's lip quivered with sadness.
"Okay, okay, stop crying. If you keep this up, your eyes will be too swollen to see," Victoria soothed her, speaking earnestly this time. "I'm really not mad at you, and I'm not ending our friendship. I was just... surprised that Elias would contact you."
Sunny managed to stop her tears, recalling the shock she'd felt when she received Elias's call. "I was surprised too."
"Isn't Mr. Shawn... engaged to Genevieve?" Sunny asked, her eyes still wet as she stared at Victoria, finally voicing the question that had been bothering her for days. "But he seems to care a lot about you, even back at Brentwood..."
