As realization dawned, Sunny gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Wait—is Mr. Shawn trying to have it both ways? Two-timing you?"
Before Victoria could answer, Sunny's expression hardened. "No way. I can't take money from a scumbag like that. Victoria, give me back my phone. I have to transfer the money back right now..."
Victoria walked into the living room and sat down on the sofa.
She turned to look at Sunny and said calmly, "He's my ex-husband. We just got divorced."
Sunny, who had been following her, stopped dead in her tracks. Stunned, she forced a smile and waved her hand dismissively. "No way, Victoria. If you're going to lie to me, at least come up with something believable."
Victoria raised an eyebrow at Sunny's confident expression, suddenly curious. "Why don't you believe me?"
"Because I've worked with you for over two years, and besides that one time at Brentwood, I've never once seen Mr. Shawn pick you up from work," Sunny said, sitting down cross-legged and laying out her reasoning. "Even if Mr. Shawn is the busiest man in the world, there's no way he couldn't find time to pick you up even once in an entire year, right?"
"And that time at Brentwood, you two acted like you didn't even know each other. Let's say you were trying to keep things secret and deliberately avoided each other. What about the way you looked at each other? The eyes don't lie. It was obvious you weren't in love."
"Besides, if Mr. Shawn was your husband, why would he let the media spread all those rumors about him and Genevieve?"
Victoria smiled. "If you applied this kind of analytical skill to your annual performance reviews, you'd have been promoted to associate director of Team Three long ago."
"The pay isn't good enough for me to..." Sunny finally relaxed, seeing her friend smile. The weight in her chest finally lifted, and she grinned back. As she was talking, she saw Victoria get up and head toward the bedroom. "Victoria, where are you going?"
A moment later, Victoria returned with something in her hand. She held it out to Sunny. "Take a look."
Confused, Sunny looked down and saw the words 'Final Judgment of Divorce' staring back at her.
Her eyes widened. She quickly took it and read it.
Sunny's mind was racing. Someone with Victoria's kind and gentle nature wouldn't have divorced Elias unless he'd done something terrible. And all those scandalous rumors had been circulating while they were still married! What wife could stand to see her husband getting cozy with another woman?
"I'm telling you this so you can accept that hundred thousand with a clear conscience," Victoria said. "You spent your time and energy, so you earned it. You don't need to feel guilty. But I don't want something like this to happen again."
She didn't know Elias's reasons for doing this, but she hated the feeling of being controlled and monitored.
If Elias could buy off someone close to her once, he could do it again.
And since Sunny had already misunderstood the situation between her and Mr. Shawn, she felt it was better to just be honest about their past relationship.
"I promise, it will never happen again! I'll block Mr. Shawn's number right now!"
Sunny raised three fingers in a solemn vow, then lowered her hand and bit her lip, asking hesitantly, "But, Victoria... do you still love him?"
