The call was from his department at the hospital.
Tobias frowned slightly at the caller ID, hesitating for a few seconds before getting up to take the call on the balcony.
At the same time, Elias's phone, which was lying face down on the dining table, buzzed twice.
Elias only glanced at it out of the corner of his eye before continuing to eat his soup.
Victoria frowned. Something felt off. "Elias, aren't you going to see who that is? What if it's Miss Vale with something urgent..."
Elias paused, the spoon halfway to his lips. He looked up and asked, "Are you jealous?"
"No."
Her answer was so quick and reflexive that he studied her face, searching for any sign of a lie.
But there was none. She was, as she said, completely calm.
She truly didn't care who was trying to contact him.
The realization hit him like a punch to the gut, leaving him breathless. He set his soup bowl down abruptly, grabbed his phone, and opened the unread message.
It was from Hawk.
[Mr. Shawn, everything at the hospital has been taken care of.]
Just then, Tobias finished his call and returned from the balcony.
"Is something wrong at the hospital?" Victoria asked, noticing his grim expression.
"The department called. They need me to come back immediately for a multi-specialty consultation to discuss a surgical plan for a patient... two months from now."
"Two months? They're planning that far in advance?" Victoria was surprised.
Tobias nodded grimly. After hearing the reason for the call, he found it odd too. He knew the patient's case, and it wasn't a particularly complex surgery. There was no need to prepare so far ahead of time.
But it was a request from the department head, so Tobias had to go.
Victoria nodded and stepped aside, gesturing for him to come in.
"I won't come in, Miss Sanger. Since Mr. Shawn is here, could you please give these to him?" With that, Hawk placed the items he was carrying on the rug just inside the door.
Victoria had a bad feeling. "What is this?"
"Oh, just some urgent documents for Mr. Shawn to sign, and a change of clothes for him."
Victoria was completely bewildered.
Hawk seemed not to notice her stunned expression and continued, "Miss Sanger, Mr. Shawn first had a car accident that resulted in a mild concussion, and now he's had a high fever all night. If he goes to the office now, it's bound to raise suspicion."
"I'm sure you know how many people are watching Mr. Shawn's every move. If the shareholders find out he's unwell, they'll definitely cause trouble. The Imperial Crest Estates is currently under renovation, and hotels are too public..."
Hawk paused, looking a bit sheepish as he rubbed his nose before continuing.
"So, to avoid any problems, I'll be telling everyone that Mr. Shawn is on a business trip for a few days. I'll have to trouble you to take care of him, Miss Sanger. I'll come pick him up once he's fully recovered."
