The journey begins–1
(Isla)
The next morning I found Sera and Pryor waiting near the entrance.
Three healers stood with them. Two guards waited nearby looking ready to leave. Caius was there too.
That should have warned me.
The moment I reached them, Caius looked at me.
Then he looked at the bag over my shoulder.
Then he looked back at me.
I narrowed my eyes.
“What?”
His expression didn’t change.
“Stay with the group.”
I sighed.
“I will.”
“Good.”
I waited.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t finished.
“If someone starts asking questions about you, let Sera answer them.”
That caught my attention.
“Why?”
“The High Council arrives soon.”
That was fair.
The fewer conversations about the Celestial wolf before the Council meeting, the better.
“I can do that.”
“Good.”
I folded my arms.
“Anything else?”
“Yes.”

Of course there was.
“If someone recognizes you, don’t encourage the conversation.”
I frowned slightly.
“You think that could happen?”
“I think news travels.”
That wasn’t exactly reassuring.
Still, he wasn’t wrong.
More wolves knew about me now than I was comfortable with.
“I’ll be careful.”
His expression relaxed slightly.
That alone told me he’d been thinking about this longer than he wanted to admit,
I looked at him for a moment.
Then I stepped closer.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“What?”
I smiled.
“You worry too much.”
“I don’t.”
“You do.”
“I don’t.”
Sera immediately looked away.
One of the healers suddenly became very interested in the ground.
Pryor looked like he wanted absolutely no part of this conversation.
I shook my head.
“You do.”
Before he could argue again, I reached up and kissed him.
For a second he seemed surprised.
Then one of his hands settled against my waist.

The journaus!
The bond warmed immediately.
A familiar feeling.
Comforting.
Safe.
When I stepped back, the corner of his mouth lifted slightly.
That was close enough to a smile for him.
“Enjoy yourself.”
The words surprised me.
Not because he meant them.
Because he said them out loud.
“I will.”
“Good.”
Sera cleared her throat dramatically.
“We should probably leave before this turns into a longer goodbye.”
That earned a laugh from one of the healers.
I rolled my eyes. Then I looked around. A few seconds passed. I looked around again. Something felt
wrong.
“Where are the horses?”
Sera blinked.
“What horses?”
I stared at her.
“The ones we’re riding.”
Understanding immediately appeared on her face.
Then she started laughing.
I wasn’t sure why.
“I thought we were leaving.”
“We are.”
“Then where are the horses?”
That only made her laugh harder.

The joumey bega
One of the healers turned away to hide a smile.
“We aren’t riding.”
I frowned.
“Then are we shifting?”
“No.”
I looked between all of them.
“Then how are we getting there?”
Sera pointed toward the road.
I followed her hand.
Then I stopped.
Something large and dark was parked nearby.
I stared at it.
For a moment I wasn’t even sure what I was looking at.
“What is that?”
Understanding immediately appeared on Sera’s face.
“You’ve never seen a vehicle before.”
I looked at her.
“That’s a vehicle?”
One of the healers started laughing.
I ignored her.
My attention stayed on the strange metal thing.
It looked enormous.
Far larger than any wagon I’d ever seen.
“People get inside that?”
“Yes.”
I stared a little longer.
“On purpose?”
That started another round of laughter.
