What I wanted
(Isla)
Caius was at the door when the vehicle pulled up. He wasn’t outside waiting, but I knew he’d been watching for us. The moment I stepped out, his eyes found mine. I smiled and held up the jar of honey in
one hand and the blue fabric in the others
“Good day?” he asked.
“It was,” I said. “A really good day.”
He opened the door and let me walk in first. Sera came in behind me, stepped close to Caius, whispered something into his ear, and then headed toward the medical wing without another word. I smiled because she’d kept her promise. She’d left the telling to me.
Caius looked at me.
“Come on,” he said.
I followed him upstairs. When we reached our room, I put the honey and the blue fabric on the table before taking the carved fox from my bag and placing it beside them. Caius sat next to me and looked over everything I’d brought home.
“You found more than honey,” he said.
“I did.”
“I want to hear about all of it.”
I smiled.
“From the beginning?”
“From the beginning.”
I laughed.
“Alright. The vehicle was first.”
“What did you think?”
“It was louder than I expected. I grabbed the seat as soon as it started moving.”
“I can picture that.”
“I didn’t even notice I’d done it until Sera laughed.”
“And after that?”
“I got used to it. I’d still rather ride a horse.”
“I thought you might say that.”

What I wanted
“You’ll probably hear me say it again.”
“I don’t doubt it.”
I laughed again before telling him about the rest of the trip. I told him about the market and the little stalls lined along the street. I told him about the woman making flat bread and how Sera bought some for us before we kept walking.
“You liked it?” he asked.
“I did. I wanted another piece before I’d even finished the first.”
“I’ll have to try it.”
“You should.”
I pointed at the honey on the table.
“I bought that after.”
“And the fabric?”
“I saw the color and liked it.”
“What are you going to do with it?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“You bought it anyway.”
“I did.”
He smiled.
“That’s reason enough.”
I smiled back.
“I thought so too.”
I picked up the fabric for a moment before setting it down again.
“I also bought the fox.”
He looked at the carving.
“I noticed.”
“I liked it the moment I saw it.”
“So you brought it home.”
“I did.”
“I’m glad.”
”
What I wanted
“So am I.”
I looked at everything on the table for a moment before turning back to him.
Claim
“There was music in the market too. A man was playing while a little child sat nearby. I stayed there for a while just listening.”
“What was that like?” he asked.
“It was different.”
“Different how?”
“No one knew who I was. No one expected anything from me. I could just walk around like everyone else.”
“And you liked that.”
“I did.”
I looked at him for a moment before speaking again.
“There’s something else.”
His eyes stayed on mine.
“What is it?”
“I saw Brent.”
He didn’t interrupt me.
“Where?”
“At the market.”
His face didn’t change, but I knew he understood what that meant.
“He was there?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?”
“I looked right at him.”
He was quiet for a moment.
“What happened?”
“He saw me. We stopped about ten feet from each other. Neither of us spoke.”
I looked at my hands before meeting his eyes again.
“I didn’t look away.”
“And him?”

“He shouldn’t have been there.”
I frowned.
“The human settlement?‘
He nodded.
“He had no business being there.”
“I thought the same thing.”
“I’ll find out why he was.”
“What are you going to do?”
Claim
“I’m going to speak to the people responsible for the settlement. If he was there without permission, he
won’t be allowed back.”
“And if someone gave him permission?”
“I’ll deal with that too.”
I studied his face.
“So he won’t be going there again?”
“No.”
He answered without hesitation.
“I’ll make sure Brent doesn’t return to the human settlement.”
I believed him.
Not because he was angry.
Because when Caius said he’d take care of something, he always did.
I looked at him and smiled.
“Apart from seeing Brent, I enjoyed myself.”
“I know.”
