The Alpha King And His Chosen Luna novel Chapter 159

The only way forward

(Isla)

I woke because of the heat

Clair

Not a dream. Not a noise. The heat, arriving all at once the way it had before, except nothing about this was like before. Before it had been warmth moving beneath my skin, something I could breathe through. Before, it had been manageable.

This was not manageable.

It started in my chest and spread outward in every direction at the same time, not warmth, fire, pressing against the inside of my skin like something trying to get out. I sat up and the movement made it worse and I made a sound I didn’t recognize as mine, something raw and broken, and then I was reaching for Caius before I’d finished deciding to.

My hand found his arm and he was awake before I’d gripped it properly, awake and upright and already turning toward me, and the moment his hands found my face the heat pulled back one fraction, just enough to breathe, just enough to understand how bad it had been a second before.

Isla. His voice was careful. Fully on me.

It’s Vaela,I said. But not like before. Not like any of the other times.

It wasn’t the bond. I knew what the bond felt like now, warm and certain and mine. I knew what Vaela felt like too, her presence, her weight, the way she moved inside me when something required her attention. This was different. This was Vaela past the point of patience, pressing against the inside of me with the urgency of something overdue that had finally become critical.

I was crying without knowing when I’d started.

Not from pain exactly. From the overwhelm of it, from the force of something I’d felt build slowly over months arriving all at once with nowhere to go. Vaela was not calm. She was as close to frantic as I’d feit her since the first shift, not with fear but with demand, like a door she had been pressing against had finally reached the point of breaking.

Caius didn’t tell me to breathe. He didn’t say it would be fine. He pulled me against him and held me there and I felt his jaw against the top of my head and his arms around me and the heat pulled back one fraction, enough that I could feel the difference between my skin and the air around it again.

Then I felt something happen to him.

A sound from him, low and involuntary, his arms tightening around me in a way that wasn’t comfort anymore. Vorak, responding to Vaela’s distress through the bond, through the scent marking, through. everything that had been building between all four of us. I felt what it was costing him in the tension across his shoulders and in his breathing.

Caius,I said

I know,he said. His voice was rough in a way it hadn’t been a moment ago.

He was holding it. Holding Vorak, holding himself, holding me at the same time.

pressed my face against his chest and he sent the mind link without letting go of me, I felt it move through the bond, brief and urgent, Sera’s name in it.

We stayed like that.

The heat came in waves now, rising until I thought I couldn’t bear another second before easing just enough for me to breathe. Every time it retreated I found myself waiting for it to return. Vaela had gone quiet in the way she always did when words were no longer enough.

I was still crying, though quieter now, the kind of crying that happened after the worst of something had passed and the body needed somewhere to put what it had just been through.

Caius said nothing. We stayed exactly where we were, holding each other without speaking. Time seemed to slow until the moment belonged only to us.

When Sera came in she took one look at both of us and didn’t say anything for a moment. She crossed to the bed and sat on the edge of it and looked at me carefully.

How long?she said.

Not long,” Caius said. Minutes.

She nodded. She looked at him next and something passed between them. Then she looked back at me.

The previous heats, she said. Were any of them this bad?

Nothing like this,I said. Before it came and went. This didn’t feel like it was going to stop.

Sera nodded slowly.

And Vaela?she said.

Frantic,I said. Not afraid. Like something has been building too long and tonight it ran out of room.

She was quiet for a moment. Then she looked between us, taking us both in together.

This is the bond, she said. Not the mate bond the way you’ve been feeling it. The deeper part of it. The part that completes.

I know what it is,I said. I’ve known it was coming. I just didn’t know it would feel like/this.”

Celestial wolves don’t carry this the way ordinary wolves do,she said. It builds differently. It holds longer. And when it reaches a certain point it stops being something either of you can manage with proximity or scent marking or anything short of the thing itself.

No one answered immediately.

The mating,” I said. Not a question this time.

And the mark,Sera said. Together. That’s the only thing that resolves this now.She paused. Your body has been telling you for a while. Tonight it stopped asking.

I looked at Caius.

He looked back at me and his expression was everything he wasn’t saying out loud, the restraint of weeks

of rules, the waiting, the particular patience of a man who had decided my timeline was the only timeline That mattered and had held to that without once making me feel the cost of it.

Vaela moved inside me

Not frantic anymore.

Certain.
