What was coming
(Caius)
I’d known something like this was coming. Not tonight specifically. But I’d known since Sera came to my office and told me what Isla had described, since I’d watched small things shift in her over time and felt something change in the bond without being able to name it clearly. What I hadn’t known was what it would feel like when it finally arrived. What Vorak would do with it. What it would cost me to hold him through it.
That part I hadn’t been prepared for.
Isla was still beside me. Her breathing had settled. The crying had stopped. She looked at her hands for a moment before she looked back at me.
“I already knew,” she said. “Before tonight. I’ve known for a while.”
“I know,” I said.
She looked at me. “You felt it?” she asked.
“Something,” I said. “Not like tonight. Tonight was different.”
She nodded once. The fire had burned low and the room was darker than it had been when Sera arrived. Neither of us moved to fix it. The dark felt right for this, for sitting in the quiet of what had just happened without needing to see it too clearly yet.
“Are you alright?” she asked.
The question caught me slightly. She was asking about me. After what she’d just been through, after the heat and the crying and Sera sitting at the edge of the bed delivering the only answer that would fix it, she was asking about me. That was Isla. It had always been Isla, even before she’d fully understood who she was becoming.
“Yes,” I said.
She held my gaze for a moment like she was checking. Then she seemed satisfied and looked toward the window.
“Vorak,” she said.
“He’s fine,” I said. “He held.”
“I felt him,” she said. “Through the bond. When it got bad.”
“I know,” I said. “He felt you too. That’s what made it harder.”
She looked at me at that. Something moved through her expression, not guilt, understanding. She reached for my hand without saying anything and I let her take it and we sat like that for a moment, the bond warm between us, neither of us needing to add anything to what had already been said.
She was quiet after that. Not uncomfortable quiet. The kind that came after something significant had passed and neither of us needed to fill it with anything. I let it sit.
What was comming
After a while she asked, “Do you remember what I asked you?”
I looked at her.
Claim
“What it would be like,” she said. “To have sex with the Alpha King. I told you I wasn’t asking for that night. That I was asking because one day I might want it.”
“I remember,” I said.
“That day is coming,” she said. “I want it to be without the heat in the room. Without anything pushing it. Just me choosing it the way I’ve chosen everything else.”
The room went very still around that.
Not because it was dramatic! Because it was simple and certain and completely hers, said the same way she said everything that mattered, without dressing it up or making it more than it was.
“Alright,” I said.
She looked at me. “You’re sure?” she asked.
“You just told me you want it,” I said. “That’s enough for tonight.”
Something moved through her expression. Then she leaned into me, not carefully, just fully. I put my arm around her and she settled against my side and the bond warmed between us the way it always did when she stopped holding any part of herself back.
Vorak went quiet inside me. Not the quiet of restraint. The quiet of a wolf who had waited long enough to know one more night was nothing.
I thought about the morning. Not in detail. Just the fact of it. Everything she had said from the beginning, the rules, the timeline, the particular certainty of a woman who had spent years having things decided for her and had decided she was done with that, had been building toward this. Toward her saying what she’d just said without fear in it. Without anything in it except wanting.
That was everything.
Neither of us spoke again.
The fire went out sometime before she fell asleep. I didn’t get up to rebuild it. The room was warm enough and she was close enough and the bond between us carried its own warmth that had nothing to do with any fire.
After a while her breathing changed and she was asleep. I stayed where I was with the bond between us and the fire out and what was coming already decided.
I thought about the question she’d asked me that night.
What would it be like.
I hadn’t answered her fully then. I’d given her honesty but not everything, because everything would have been too much for a room still held together by rules and distance and the careful space two people kept between themselves when they both understood what was there but weren’t ready to close the gap yet.
What was conting
She’d know soon enough.
