Caius left after we spoke.

Something about Pryor and the guard captain and the follow up from the settlement visit. He’d looked at me for a moment the way he looked at me when he was checking without asking, and then he’d gone.

I sat in our quarters for a while after he left.

The decision had been sitting with me since the healer’s house. Not heavily. Not the way things used to sit on me when I had no way to move them. More like something waiting at the edge of my attention that I kept circling without landing on.

I reached for my phone and opened it.

I didn’t know exactly what to search for at first. I typed pending sentence wolf pack law into the search and got results that were mostly about human legal systems which wasn’t what I needed. I tried again. Pack law confession direct harm. That got closer. I spent twenty minutes reading through things I only half understood before I found a site that explained wolf territorial law in plain language and I stayed there for a long time.

What I found was this.

A pending sentence with a confession already on record gave the Alpha King or ruling authority full discretion over outcome. It wasn’t bound by standard sentencing guidelines the way a denied charge would be. The confession changed the shape of what was possible. It meant the decision could go anywhere from full execution to conditional release depending on what the ruling authority decided was just given the full circumstances.

Full circumstances.

I put the phone down for a moment and thought about that.

The full circumstances were complicated. They included years of harm done knowingly. They included a confession made without being pushed. They included a man who had gone to a trade yard four days after arriving somewhere new and started loading cargo. They included a woman who had given up everything she’d built because the bond arrived and she’d chosen

her mate anyway.

They included me standing in a healer’s house and asking why and getting the plainest answer I’d ever received from anyone who had ever hurt me.

Because it was easy.

I picked the phone back up.

I searched for something different this time. Conditional release pending sentence wolf law. What came up was more specific than I expected. Conditional release was an option in cases where the confession demonstrated genuine accountability and the behavior since the offence suggested the risk of repeated harm was low. It came with conditions attached Regular reporting. Restricted movement. A formal record that followed the person permanently. It wasn’t freedom. It was something in between, a recognition that the harm was real and documented and that the person carrying it was being held to account in a way that didn’t require a cell.

I sat with that for a long time.

Vaela stirred inside me.

Is that what you want?she asked.

I thought about it honestly.

Not what was easiest. Not what looked right from the outside. What I actually wanted when I held the full picture of it, Brent in that healer’s house, the answer he’d given me, the apology with nothing around it, the man who had watched me become something and let it change him even when it was too late to matter for anything except the truth.

I don’t want him free,’ I said. Not without conditions.

No, Vaela said. But you don’t want him in a cell either.

No,I said. I don’t.

She was quiet after that.

I looked at the phone again. I went back to the first site and read through the conditional release section one more time, making sure I understood what it actually meant in practice. The conditions could be set by the ruling authority. Caius. Which meant they could be specific. They could be tailored to exactly what the situation called for rather than a standard set of restrictions that didn’t account for any of the things that made this situation what it

was.

That mattered.

I put the phone down on the bed beside me and looked at the window.

Brent had said the hall felt like the only place he was ever going to get to put it down. I’d been

thinking about that since the healer’s house. Not because it softened anything Because it told me something about where he was in all of this. He wasn’t carrying it lightly. He wasn’t moving through his days in the settlement pretending the past was something that had happened to someone else.

He was carrying it.

He’d chosen to carry it out loud in that hall and he’d done it again in that healer’s house and those were two separate choices made in two very different rooms and they added up to something I couldn’t dismiss even when I wanted to.

I wasn’t ready to forgive him.

I didn’t know if I ever would be and I wasn’t going to decide that today. Forgiveness wasn’t what this was about. This was about what happened to a man who had confessed, who hadn’t run, who had built something quiet and ordinary in a settlement he had no right to be in, and what the right response to all of that looked like when the person making the decision was the person he had hurt.
