(Caius)

She found me in the office an hour after I’d left her.

I heard her footsteps in the corridor before she reached the door, the sound of someone who had already made up her mind. I set my pen down before she knocked.

She came in and closed the door behind her and stood in front of the desk and looked at me.

I know what I want,she said.

I waited.

She sat down across from me, not on the edge of the chair the way she used to sit when she was still learning whether she was allowed to be comfortable in a room, but fully, the way she sat everywhere now.

Conditional release, she said. With conditions we set. Not standard restrictions.

Conditions that fit this specific situation.

I looked at her.

You researched it,I said.

Yes,she said. I needed to understand what was possible before I decided what I wanted.

That was Isla. Not waiting for someone to bring her the options. Going to find them herself.

Tell me what you’re thinking,” I said.

She leaned forward slightly. He reports to a designated authority at regular intervals. Monthly at minimum. He stays within a defined area, the settlement and its immediate surrounds, nothing beyond that without permission. The record stays permanent, it follows him everywhere, every pack or community he ever enters knows what he did and what the sentence was.She held my gaze. And he has no contact with anyone from Ashcrest. Not Rodan. Not Maren. Not Derek. Not any of them. Ever.

I sat with that.

It was precise. It wasn’t lenient and it wasn’t cruel. It accounted for everything he’d done and everything he’d shown since, and it left him with a life that was genuinely restricted in ways that mattered without putting him in a cell for something that a permanent record and regular reporting could hold just as well.

Nothing bags

The no contact condition,I said. That’s the one with teeth.

Yesshe said. If he breaks it the conditional release ends and the original sentence applies. No second chance.”

Agreed,I said.

She looked at me. You’re not going to argue with any of it?

No,” I said. It’s right.

Something moved through her expression. Not surprise exactly. More like relief at not having to defend it.

Dara?” she asked,

Formal censure. Permanent removal from royal guard standing. No confinement.I looked at her, I handled that earlier.

She nodded, Good,

I picked up my pen and pulled a document toward me. I’ll have Pryor draw up the formal terms today. The conditions need to be in writing before anything is delivered to Brent.

How long will that take?she asked.

A dayI said. Maybe two. Pryor is thorough.

She nodded once and sat back. The tension that had been in her since the healer’s house had changed into something different. Not gone. Settled. The way things settled when a decision had been made and the making of it had been the right thing regardless of how the rest of it

went.

I watched her for a moment.

How do you feel?I asked.

She thought about it before answering, which was always a good sign with Isla. She never gave me the easy answer when the honest one was available.

I feel like I did what I could with what I had,she said. I don’t feel good about it and I don’t feel bad about it, I just feel like it’s done.

It doesn’t have to be anything more than that,I said.

She looked at me. Are you sure?

Nothing changes

Yes,I said. Not every decision comes with relief attached. Some of them just come with the knowledge that you did it right.

She held my gaze for a moment. Then she nodded once and looked at the desk

What happens when the formal terms are ready?she asked.

Pryor sends word to the settlement,I said. Brent is informed of the conditions in writing He has the option to accept or decline.

She frowned slightly. He can decline?

Conditional release requires acceptance,I said. If he declines the original sentence applies.

She was quiet for a moment. He won’t decline.”

No,I said. I don’t think he will either.

She looked at the window. Outside the evening had settled fully into night and the office was warm and quiet. Neither of us felt any need to fill the silence.

Dara accepting the censure, she said. Does she have to formally accept that too?

It’s been delivered,I said. She doesn’t have the option to decline a censure the way Brent has the option to decline conditional release. It’s a formal mark not an offer.

Will she know about Brent’s sentence?she asked.

When it’s formally delivered yes,I said. They’re in the same location. She’ll know.

Isla looked at her hands for a moment. I think she already knows he’s going to be alright, she said. She didn’t look like someone waiting to find out how things went. She looked like someone who had already decided they were going to be fine.

I thought about Dara in that healer’s house. The way she’d stood there and faced us without running. The way she’d answered Isla’s questions without deflection or performance.

She probably has,I said.

Isla looked back at me. She’s good for him,she said. That’s not why I’m doing this. But it’s true.

I know,I said.

She stood up.

I stood with her

For a moment we just looked at each other across the desk. Neither of us said anything.

Thank you,” she said.

I looked at her. For what?

For letting it be mine,” she said. The decision. You could have made it weeks ago and you didn’t.

It was never mine to make,I said.

She held my gaze for a moment longer. Then she came around the desk and I met her halfway and she leaned into me.

If it had been entirely my decision,I said, Brent would have stood beside Rodan
